Re: Is An MS Windows Dual Boot Dangerous to Mint; to GRUB?

Interesting, @administrollaattori . I see the person in your link had MBR partitions. That relates to @gm10 and @ajgringo619 saying it's the Legacy BIOS/MBR partitions at risk. Though @Pierre cautions that while MS Windows Updates "in general" are safe "you are playing with fire." Like @gm10 and oth...

Is An MS Windows Dual Boot Dangerous to Mint; to GRUB?

This year I made Linux my main operating system on both PCs, temporarily maintaining one as a Windows 10 dual boot. As I began seeking ways to fully eliminate Microsoft , I grew concerned over warnings that not only MS Windows upgrades, but also MS updates and even patches can damage GNU GRUB and se...

Re: Mint 19.1 Dual Boot Install Goes Haywire

Thanks, @PolarVortex . I "hear you" regarding all the problems out there with dual boot. I've marked this post "[SOLVED]" because I can finally add a second/alternate fix to further benefit future forum searches. It comes from the Linux section over at ACER Inc.'s ACER Community forum. Enter the UEF...

[SOLVED] Mint 19.1 Dual Boot Install Goes Haywire

I just installed Linux Mint 19.1 Xfce alongside the Windows Boot Manager controlling Windows 10 version 1809, with the intention of eventually dropping Windows entirely. Curiously, the Ubuntu installer failed to offer a choice for default operating system. So I went to the UEFI control panel to set ...

Re: Interest: If ever there was reason to uninstall mono, this is it

Don't apps that need mono get removed when removing mono? I thought they did.
Makes sense; I should have scanned the removal output more carefully. So I'll assume such removals to be the case unless informed otherwise.

Re: Using Mint Cleaning Commands VS Bleachbit, etc.

Much thanks to Schultz , Pjotr , jchelpau , and gm10 for some highly helpful clarification plus references on maintaining Mint 19.1 and the forthcoming 19.2. While your detailed input “solves” the matter for me, it doesn’t seem appropriate to insert the customary “[SOLVED]” as this could be consider...

[SOLVED] Using Mint Cleaning Commands VS Bleachbit, etc.

Other than for faulty Microsoft Windows , I’ve found PC/tablet/smartphone cleaning applications to be largely hype. So despite Bleachbit being offered through the Linux Mint Software Manager, after several months using Mint 19.1 Tessa I clean and maintain through three commands: $ sudo apt-get autoc...

Re: Interest: If ever there was reason to uninstall mono, this is it

So with Mono present by default in Linux Mint , I uninstalled it in my Mint 19.1 Tessa systems using: sudo apt-get remove mono-runtime-common But won’t it be reinstalled automatically should you unwittingly install an application that needs the Mono infrastructure? Also, after running the removal ab...

Re: Mint 19.1 Unable To Mount Android SmartPhone?

Any luck, Anasthasie? If not, you may want to use an XDE (Android) forum. Android runs on the Linux kernel so XDE development types should have a feel for Linux. Those here who've tried to help have already suggested almost everything I would have. I've used Android devices since 2013, my current tw...

Re: Should brand new USB sticks go immediately through "USB Stick Formatter?"

Much thanks for the input, karlchen , Mute Ant , Isemmens , hcentaur13 , Pjotr , and phd21 . Curiously, while awaiting forum response I tried to "eject" my new PNY USB 3.0 Flash Drive and got an error message. The message disappeared too quickly to read details, and also gone was the USB FD. Should brand new USB sticks go immediately through "USB Stick Formatter?"

Per my question in the heading, I'd normally format. But upon switching to Mint 19.1 a few weeks ago two MS Windows formatted sticks were invisible to xfce "Tessa." I had to off-load more than 120 GB to my lone dual-booting Windows 10 PC, reformat, then reload. Don't recall if I reformatted in both ...

Re: "Broken Cache" After Failed EPSON Printer Installation

Oh, that's right, Timeshift is designed to protect ONLY system files and settings and EXCLUDES files such as documents, pictures, and music. I'd need to reinstall/reconfigure the printer; no big deal. Unfortunately, I must have chosen a Timeshift default saving three Snapshots per week. So Timeshift...

Re: "Broken Cache" After Failed EPSON Printer Installation

Thanks @ClixTrix for the "apt-get command info." I've been using a so-called "APT Cheat Sheet." (https://blog.packagecloud.io/eng/2015/03/30/apt-cheat-sheet/) But, yeah, don't know what exactly it did either. Now I get: E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend - open (13: Permission d...

Re: Portable SSD USB 3.0 Compatibility Question

Very helpful, CatWeazel; an excellent reference going forward. Much thanks. I've been pleasantly surprised how seamless has been the Mint 19.1 fit with PCs originally designed for Windows 7 and 8.1 manufactured in 2012 and 2014, the older one using a hybrid BIOS with EFI support. In fact, other than...

[SOLVED] Portable SSD USB 3.0 Compatibility Question

Having just converted my Windows 10 PCs to Linux Mint 19.1 , leaving one temporarily set for dual boot as a precaution, I’ve experienced no noteworthy issues transferring files with USB sticks and SD cards. However, today I hesitated purchasing a PNY “Elite USB 3.0 Portable SSD (PSD1CS1050-240-FFS)”...

Thanks for the guidance, gm10 -- and certainly as well @JoeFootball and @redlined . Although the USB drive integrity mystery remains, I marked this post "Solved" because I can now trust installing Mint 19.1. But I first tried a final experiment. Emptying a USB 3.0 flash drive, I flashed the "Tessa" ...

Re: Freezes A Hint Not to Use MATE?

Ran "Verify Integrity of the Medium" on the MATE USB stick and got this: Check finished: errors found in 1 files. Press any key to reboot your system. Apparently there's no additional information to be had from a Live Session so I let MS Windows check the 8GB stick. Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.1...

Re: Freezes A Hint Not to Use MATE?

Okay, JoeFootball , gm10 , and redlined . Lots to digest there. First, gm10 , I failed to mention the drive so far worked flawlessly in my newer, 4GB RAM unit. The Checksum for MATE verified and I used BalenaEtcher to create all three bootable flash drives. BalenaEtcher theoretically verifies a flas...
