Can one install a rootkit within 10 seconds with the above remote eaves dropping technique? One can, with a wireless mouse. 250 ft in a city area could scan hundreds of computers simultaneously AND install a rootkit.
Not without the user entering the administrator password.

If you run malware using the games, yes. But games usually don't traffic malware in to your computer like email or web browsers do.

Re: Root access problem [SOLVED]

I'm so sorry that I've confused many of you out there with the types of accounts in Linux that I mentioned at the main post. I finally get a clear understanding of the types of accounts in Linux. In Linux, there are three types of accounts. The root account, the admin account and the user account. ...

Re: Root access problem

Use a single account for yourself, the one you created. Using separate accounts here doesn't help much in Linux.

Everything gets loaded un-encrypted in to RAM first, how else would you encrypt something without the original version?

You don't need to 'maintain' Linux like that unless you're very low on disk space.

Re: How best to clean up detritus from failed desktop sharing attempt

jchelpau : So what you are saying is to set up an "internal" or "virtual" VPN or (perhaps) more accurate proxy that would act as a sort of sub-router for all my computers? I would imagine that this would be addressable from the outside world in the form of https://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:port-of-choice? No...

Re: Moved hard drive to new PC and it ... just worked???

You'll probably want to install proprietary nvidia drivers for extra performance, but that's about it.
Linux doesn't have the issue of being locked to specific hardware.

Re: Is it true Cinnamon created with Javascript ?

It's very difficult to conclude this is due to Cinnamon's Javascript use. You haven't profiled Cinnamon to find the hot loops or memory allocation, for example.

Re: Is it true Cinnamon created with Javascript ?

I know python is used for tasks that doesn't need fast responses, but why Javascript for GUIs ? why using one of the slowest interpreted languages on the planet inside a big project like Cinnamon ? is it not efficient to use C/C++ ? Is Cinnamon trying to go the fast and easy way to create shiny UIs...

jchelpau: Not too sure what you mean. I am running a VPN vis-a-vis the WAN. How would one run a VPN on LAN? What purpose would it serve? Your stuff never goes anywhere, unless this (No Machine) is actually running through the "cloud" (or some other remote server) in which case I will delete it . Fr...

It might be a better idea to run a VPN on your network instead of exposing your VNC servers to LAN.

Uppercase only letters and digits is 36 possibilities per character. So 53,568,000,000,000 log 36 is 8.8, rounding up to 9. Most people also use lower case letters too, so that increases possibilities by another 26. so, assuming your algorithm is correct it would be 53,568,000,000,000 log 62 = 9.6 ...

If you've been using only apt to add and remove programs, the only cruft would be minor files in your home directory. You could try finding and deleting them by hand, but there's not much point unless the files are causing a problem.
