Re: that "Ah HA!" moment...has arrived

Thank you so much for this reference. I just did some reading up on RT, and that's now on the list. Training, though, that's what I need: a place to start where I can get the basics down and not have to wander around the Web so much re-inventing the wheel. Lynda.com, for instance, has a great start...

If you don't find darktable your thing, try RawTherapee. I've used it for photos for years and it runs on even the slowest machines I use.

Re: return to windows emotional support group

I bought a refurbished laptop with Windows 7 Pro installed. I spent way too much time setting up a dual boot with VeraCrypt for Windows and LUKS for Linux Mint. To actually make a backup of my system I could reinstall I had to go out and buy a stack of DVDs so I could burn a Windows 7 Startup Repair...

Re: Can all Linux computers still be hacked in 10 seconds via "mousejacking"?

Sounds like a security problem, but there's not much OSes can do about it. If you're really worried you could use Bluetooth instead.

Re: How long should a WPA password be?

WPA2 passwords can be guessed offline, so let's do some math... A GTX 1080 at the moment is $800 so let's assume your attacker has that. According to this benchmark it gets ~8600 million SHA1 guesses a second. According to this StackOverflow post a WPA2 password takes at least 4096 SHA1 guesses to g...

Re: Can all Linux computers still be hacked in 10 seconds via "mousejacking"?

With unencrypted connections I'd be more concerned about wireless keylogging than hijacking.

Re: Can't see my windows Workgroup Network

Seeing a list of computers in your network is no longer supported in SMB2 onwards.
You can solve this by setting Samba to use the NT1 protocol like this: 'min protocol = NT1'
Beware that this is insecure and disabled by default on newer Windows 10 installs too.

I've updated systems between 18 releases, from 18 to 19 and between 19 releases.
Everything has worked fine without any problems at all.

Re: Upgrading from HDD to SSD, best way to clone drive?

bs=100M makes it copy in faster chunks, and status=progress will show how much has been copied at regular intervals. Before doing this run 'lsblk -b' in a terminal and check that the HDD and SSD drives have the same byte amount, or the SSD has a larger size. Copying the HDD to a SSD that's smaller (...

Re: Who can help where to find a wired mouse, which cord doesnt get entangled?

Have you tried tying up the cable to make it shorter?
Like looping it around your hand a few times until it's short enough then use a hair band or other tie to keep it in the loop?

Re: Applications for first time Mint user-PIM with reminders

I tested KOrganizer and it seems to be able to do what you need to do. I would recommend this.
I also tested Efficient Reminders/Efficient Calendar in Wine and found that it works, although it likely needs some tweaking to fix some graphical errors.

Re: Backup for Dual Boot Syatem

I currently dual boot Windows 7 and Mint 19.1. I use Windows rarely so my backup system is inefficient: I have Windows and its partitions, an NTFS storage partition and Linux and its partitions. I created a repair disc in Windows 7 and do full image backups so I can restore Windows completely from s...

Re: SMB-shares, again [SOLVED]

Thanks everyone, I've ended by bookmarking my SMB-shares in Nemo and creating a launcher on desktop) Anyway, it's a strange bug, i've tried Caja file browser, same error. Maybe someday it will work as it should)) I don't think it's a bug as much as expected behavior: SMB2 onwards don't support brow...
