SOLVED - MATE config broken on my account only

The problem: When I select MATE on the login screen and log in, all I get is the background with no panels. Any windows I open have no header (where I can minimise, maximise, etc). What I did to get into this state: I had been trying to untangle Wine from my system, as the Wine uninstall had left a...

Re: Need help with screen res on new 27" Acer monitor [RESOL

Thanks for that - I would have played with it if I hadn't changed the board - but I did have other graphics issues that have now been solved by the replacement (e.g. I only ever saw the x-windows, and the console output was never displayed). Replacement was the right thing to do - and it was cheap! :)

Thanks for your help so far. :) I ended up with: david@desktop ~ $ update-alternatives --display x-terminal-emulator x-terminal-emulator - auto mode link currently points to /usr/bin/mate-terminal /usr/bin/koi8rxterm - priority 20 slave x-terminal-emulator.1.gz: /usr/share/man/man1/koi8rxterm.1.gz /...

Setting the TERM environment variable [SOLVED]

This is a little problem that's annoying me - I haven't found a solution yet, and I have been digging around... My system is Linux Mint 13 running Mate I want mate-terminal to run when I start a script in X windows/Mate, but I keep getting xterm. This is what I have at the moment: david@desktop ~ $ ...

Re: Need help with screen res on new 27" Acer monitor

Note the heading says [RESOLVED] not [SOLVED] After much investigation it looks like it was the NVIDIA driver (173) that was giving me grief - when I plugged a spare 19" monitor into the VGA port I could see that the driver thought that the 19" one was capable of very high resolution, (it wasn't) wh...

Re: "Open in Terminal" not working for me

Good call!

This is my setup:

Code: Select all

david@desktop ~ $ env | grep erm
TERM=xterm
COLORTERM=mate-terminal
But when I looked in the synaptic package manager xterm wasn't installed! I have no idea where that went, as it's not something I would uninstall intentionally...

Anyway - many thanks! :)

"Open in Terminal" not working for me [SOLVED]

This is a trivial thing, but it's driving me nuts... Also, if I run an executabl...

Need help with screen res on new 27" Acer monitor [RESOLVED]

I have just fitted a new Acer 27" monitor (V273HL), but can't get the full 1920x1080 resolution - I can only select up to 1440x900. OS: Linux Mint 13 Mate edition Machine: Dell Workstation 450 Nvidia driver: version-173-updates (version-173 gives same results) lspci gives me this: 00:00.0 Host bridg...

Regarding 1c, screensaver: I uninstalled gnome-screensaver and installed xscreensaver in Mint 12 Lisa w/Cinnamon, and it works well, except for the panel lock screen button, the favorites menu lock screen button, and the keybinding Ctrl-Alt-l. How can I fix that? Thanx in advance! :) I have the sam...

Re: Error messages with dual-screen nvidia setup

jp734 - you're quite right, the xorg.conf file is screwy. But I have found out what's screwing up Gnome - it's installing the nvidia driver! Somewhere between the driver and Gnome the xorg file gets created incorrectly. :shock: Anyway, I've resolved the issue - I've dumped Gnome and installed Linux ...

Re: Mint 12 login with Gnome has no menus/ title bar

I would also be interested in an answer to this problem: I have just installed Mint 12 - Gnome Classic works as expected, but the standard Gnome just shows the Computer and Home icons, plus Thunderbird (which is set to autostart at login). The top and bottom panels are missing. UPDATE: I don't have ...

How very odd - switched the machine on this evening, and it worked perfectly in Mint... I think I'll have to mark this thread [Problem Gone Away] rather than [Solved]. :roll: I hope it's nothing intermittent - I hate that sort of fault. It'll be something to watch in the future, that's for sure. Tha...

Re: GRUB can no longer find my network card! Help!

OK - I give in - it may well be a motherboard NIC problem, or a BIOS issue. I'm going to put in a borrowed network card to see if the on-board NIC is faulty, and work from there. It's strange that it works for one system and not the other though... Very confusing, very annoying. :? Thanks for all yo...

Re: GRUB can no longer find my network card! Help!

If the network card wasn't working when booted into Windows then I'd agree - what is confusing me is that the network card is working 100% OK under XP - I've looked in windows system setup and there is no contention for addresses and IRQs. As far as XP is concerned, it's a valid and working network ...
