I'll also be getting a USB extension "base" for the wifi adapter but I'm not sure whether a USB 3.0 base would be fine. Wifi adapter is on 2.0 and has Bluetooth but I have 3.0 ports. Seems like 3.0 ports interfere with BT although I don't see myself using it soon, I'm fine with wired perip...

Re: Questions before I upgrade to LM 20 Ulyana
That's your preference, and I cannot debate that. Hehe yeah. I just happen to have 2 PCs, really. A lot of Linux users I see who have multiple machines seem to be doing some sort of development or programming etc. and I can see, like you explained, why they stay with a particular series, sometimes ...

Re: Questions before I upgrade to LM 20 Ulyana
LM x.3 Just curious, why x.3 and not, say, x.1? My PCs are my daily drivers. I don't see a need to install 19.x and 20.x side by side. One of the beauties of Linux in general and Linux Mint in particular, as long as you have a good data file backup policy, is that you can explore, try things out an...

Re: Questions before I upgrade to LM 20 Ulyana
Those are ambiguous questions, to which I shall ambiguously answer, it depends. Rushed questions, actually, sorry about that. I'll have to further look into them. I don't really like clean installs because I'd have to set everything up again, but because of my perpetual noobness I would need it any...

Re: Questions before I upgrade to LM 20 Ulyana
I'm pretty much just a regular, non-techie user so jumping into the latest release is just my natural course of action. Just for context :) I would take Snap out of any consideration. Yes I think Snap generally is a...thing I shouldn't be doing. Good news is there's a .deb option for the app so that...

Re: Questions before I upgrade to LM 20 Ulyana
LM 19.3 is still supported until April 2023 Yes, I'm aware of that. Except for the programs I use, I also don't have a compelling reason to stay with 19.3 (but I'm guessing that's mostly the reason for staying?). It looks like I found one that requires Snap on LM 20, though, so there's that. Thanks.

Re: Questions before I upgrade to LM 20 Ulyana
https://packages.ubuntu.com/ Linux MInt 20 is based on focal. Thank you. it may be worth upgrading from within LM19.3 but the process is slow I think it would be mentally healthier for me to just do a clean install :D Was against it initially but I just know I'll bork it if I go the mintupdate rout...

[SOLVED] Questions before I upgrade to LM 20 Ulyana
This will be my first time upgrading to a whole new Ubuntu base. I understand that coming from 19.3, I need to be doing a clean install. And file backups. My main concern is the compatibility of the software/apps I'm using, and whether they're already available in the repos, excluding Flatpaks. For ...

but, typically, it's from some eBay store. That's what I've been feeling about this so far: it may not matter where the adapters came from, or whether or not they're from a known brand. It also helps that vendors mention their product works on Linux, although I wish they also explicitly mentioned t...

Hi again and sorry if my reply's late. No. I'm not sure about that particular chipset.... Personally, I wouldn't buy it. Bummer. I remember seeing a couple of reviews on Amazon that indeed it didn't work on Linux. Looks like I should go with EDUP EP-AC1661, then ( RTL8821CU-CG ). Driver download pag...

Re: Wireless adapters for desktop on LM 19.3 and beyond: What are guaranteed brands and what to look for? PC specs in te
Hi and thanks once again! The vendor sent me the specs for TP-Link Archer T2U Plus. It has additional chips, Richwave RTC5633C, looks like it's for the 5GHz band? It seems I would need to do some compiling with 8811, but I wouldn't mind if I can do it just once and automate it upon kernel (or other)...

Hello again! So I came up with a shortlist  I'd appreciate some feedback, TIA! Main qualifications are that they're dual band and have an external antenna. I excluded those without brand names but if I should consider them too please tell me. In my book USD 15 and below is cheap, $30 is &qu...

Hey, I just found the following: Realtek 8192 300Mbps 802.11n/g/b USB Wireless WiFi LAN Network Card Adapter - Brand: DIZA100 That was what I was talking about in a previous reply, "private label" stuff--people just seem to take a generic adapter and put their "brand" on it. Not...

Re: Wireless adapters for desktop on LM 19.3 and beyond: What are guaranteed brands and what to look for? PC specs in te
Or do what I do which is to buy cheap ones by the dozen and then play around with them. I found a brandless adapter that seems to be exploited by those "private label" brands. There's also a couple that are not really cheap but got good reviews. In a way Amazon US is similar to our local ...

don't attach too much importance to "plug-and-play" Actually I'm worried whether I can install missing drivers on my offline desktop through my online laptop and maybe a USB flash drive. The router is outside my room and is at a spot where I can't really set up my desktop beside it for in...

Thanks for your replies! I searched for adapters available locally and it seems those with Intel and Atheros chips are hard to find. The most I see is Realtek, then Ralink, which are also found in cheap brandless ones from China. I must add that I couldn't connect my desktop to the internet (I'm usi...

[SOLVED] Wireless adapters for desktop on LM 19.3 and beyond: What are guaranteed brands and what to look for?
UPDATE: I got an EDUP EP-AC1661 and it works. Had some hiccups at first, though. ( Here's the thread , shout-out to @JeremyB!) Thanks everyone for helping this clueless Mint fan. -- I have no idea. Will be ordering overseas (Amazon US). Is the internal PCI adapter better than a WiFi adapter, or are...
