Re: Disaster after cleaning [SOLVED]

@Damien
Thanks also to you for these suggestions.
To remove old Kernel I use the function integrated in the update manager.

Re: Disaster after cleaning [SOLVED]

Why not use 'Bleachbit'? There are two versions. One runs as Root, and deals with system rubbish, and the other user rubbish. I have been using them for a two years now, and had no problems. They are both in the Software Manager. Yes, I know this software, I used it years ago on Ubuntu. But I've al...

Re: Disaster after cleaning [SOLVED]

@Pierre
Thanks
Yesterday I was particularly unlucky, the translator "created" commands that, instead of being unsuccessful, killed my system.
To end the beautiful day before going to sleep a Kingston USB pen died, she was 3 or 4 years old but chose just yesterday to stop working :(

Re: Disaster after cleaning

I was very quick to reinstall and customize Mint 18.3 Before putting "resolved" to this discussion I would like to ask something. I have problems re-installing VLC (Flathub) - Telegram and Avidemux The problem is that the installation of these programs is not successful "Installation ...

Re: Disaster after cleaning

I was a victim of Google Translate ...: - / Sorry for all the inconvenience and loss of time. Perhaps the most important lesson to be learned from this disaster is the importance of data file backups. There are many ways to do that, e.g., Back in Time or Grsync. Timeshift is NOT suitable. Set up a ...

Re: Disaster after cleaning

A distraction that cost a lot of damage to my computer :-( I had your suggestions saved on text files and periodically I used them Today I saw that my computer was slow (new Kernel?) And I decided to do a cleaning, but I didn't use the text file with the commands (in English) copied, but I took it d...

Re: Disaster after cleaning

As you can see in the English vs. Italian translation I made the unforgivable mistake
The command was also translated, and I was very unlucky

Re: Disaster after cleaning

A thumbnail is a miniature picture, so it's probable that a translation engine used that meaning. Lanser @Larser Thanks to you and Piotr for revealing the mystery. If you read my few messages on this forum you will discover that I don't know English and I use Google translator (even now to write) -...

Re: Disaster after cleaning

I tried to use Photorec but it recovers many files without the original name, so they are useless for me. You said that some of the important files were text files. Recover them anyway. You can search inside the text and find the ones you need most, and rename them. Thanks but when I stopped the pr...

Re: Disaster after cleaning

Just so you know: rm -rfv ~ / .cache / miniature with the spaces is the same as doing rm -rfv ~ = remove your entire $HOME rm -rfv / = remove the entire OS (but you probably didn't have permission) rm -rfv .cache = probably 'file not found' rm -rfv / = remove the entire OS again. rm -rfv miniature ...

Re: Disaster after cleaning

Probably this story will remain a mystery to me. I found that there was no such command on Piotr's website. But how (and from where) I did (twice) copy / paste is inexplicable to me. I tried to use Photorec but it recovers many files without the original name, so they are useless for me. I tried Tim...

I'm on Photorec but I can't tell it to save the data on a different partition, it only proposes me positions on the partition I want to recover

Mysteries, mysteries.... Will they ever be solved? :wink:

At least two things are abundantly clear:

1. You did *not* get that horrible command from my website;

2. For damage limitation, you best follow the advice that rene gave you.
This is a mystery indeed! And I'm scared.

Re: Disaster after cleaning

Does anyone know how to indicate a valid program for file recovery?

I would try to save at least the text files.
In the past I used Photorec but I never had results.

Re: Disaster after cleaning

I do not understand :-( I am convinced that I have copied and pasted. Well, not from my website then. The right command has always been the same on my website, as this snapshot from the Wayback Machine archive shows: https://web.archive.org/web/20190212074421/https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c...

Re: Disaster after cleaning

I hope this is the right section to ask for help. (otherwise please move) I executed a command found here: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/clean-mint.html That would be it rm -rfv ~ / .cache / miniature What kind of command is that? You most certainly did not, I repeat *not*, learn that...

Once again, see above, you added spaces.

Re: Disaster after cleaning

@Pjotr

I only indicated where I found the command.
I didn't accuse anyone.
Of course I did copy paste, it's convenient, where did I go wrong?
