Possible to save window positions? [Solved]

I'm new to Gnome, Metacity and Compiz. I wonder if there is any way at all to save the postion and/or size of an application window on exit so that it launches in the same place on next opening. This is possible with fluxbox, not sure about Gnome?

Any ideas appreciated.

Enhance the forum Search tool

I am finding the forum search facility to be rather limited. Even "Advanced Search" does not enable one to search for a phrase for instance. Unless I am missing something. I have resorted to using and advanced Google search on http://forums.linuxmint.com. Is it a really big job to enhance the search?

Re: gconf-editor keyboard shortcut not working [Solved]

OK, figured it out. If you have Compiz enabled then Compiz takes over Metacity somehow, so you must set these KB shortcuts in Preferences, CompizConfig Settings Manager, Commands (add whatever you want), then check the Enable box.

gconf-editor keyboard shortcut not working [Solved]

I want to bind the "<Control><Alt>b" shortcut to opera. I am doing that with gconf-editor, apps, metacity, and adding appropriate values at "global_keybindings" and "keybinding commands", but without any luck.

Anyone have any suggestions for me?

No sound with Gloria and SB Audigy 2 soundcard [Solved]

Just loaded Gloria on this box that has a built in Via sound chip (disabled in BIOS) and a much better SoundBlaster Audigy 2 card. The Via chip, despite being shut off in BIOS is recognized and works fine. The Audigy 2 chip is also recognized but no sound whatsover. Yes, I have tried the Analog/Digi...

Re: XFCE CE 7 Gloria Development update(June 22)

merlwiz79: thanks for all your hard work. I am looking forward to testing and hopefully using Mint XFCE CE 7. I assume you will have beta's to test, and if so you will provide a download link?

Re: Is their a daemon to update time from a time server?

Thanks for that DrHu, did not see that facility. I think though, I'll stick with my once weekly "rdate" script from cron rather than have ntpdate running as a continual process. After all, once a week checking the clock is more than enough, more than that is a bit pedantic! :D Thanks...

Re: Another "lost all sound" problem

First of all decide which is the "better" sound chip, then go into your BIOS and turn off the chip you do not want. Perhaps alsa is confused. Then insert a music CD, play it, open alsamixer and keep unmuting and increasing the sliders until you get sound.

Is their a daemon to update time from a time server?

I am fairly new to Mint, but an old Slackware guy. I have looked through all the processes (ps aux) and the cron files to see if Mint is set up to update the hardware clock automatically. I don't see anything obvious, but please correct me if I am wrong. If there isn't something already set up I wil...

Re: Another "lost all sound" problem

Try opening "alsamixer" in a terminal, find Audigy Analog/Digital Output Track and press the "m" key to unmute it.

Re: Photo Editing Software

I don't understand how you say you used Paint Shop, Photo Shop and Corell Draw in Windows and then go on to say that the Gimp is too sophisticted? If all you want is a basic programme that does the simple photo editing stuff such as red-eye, cropping, blur, etc then just download and install Google ...

Re: Random crashes with Firefox

Random crashes are usually indicative of faulty hardware, being as no other person has posted such serious problems re FF and Mint. When this happens is the base of your laptop really hot?, ie it is shutting down due to overheating.... I would do the following: 1) ensure you know what make/model har...

Re: Mint doesn't boot from CD at all (Asus N50VN)

Please don't double post.

I assume you have tried other Linux Live CD's and they boot fine? If yes, did you burn the Mint CD's yourself? If so, did you check the md5sum of the download and the burn? If you did burn them yourself I assume you burned them as an ISO and not as a data file?

Re: building new computer, can I move current HDD to it?

I am assuming you mean you have Mint installed on the old HDD and you are going to place that HDD in a new computer, with a different motherboard and other different hardware. It may work and it may not. Depends if Mint recognizes all the new hardware and loads appropriate modules. Don't expect it t...

Mint 7 Fluxbox Menu anyone?

I wonder if anyone has a nice English Fluxbox menu completed for Mint 7 and its apps? The fluxbox package has an auto-generated menu which is OK, but not very complete nor well organized. If I get no response to this post within a few days then I will start my own revised Fluxbox Menu for Mint 7 and...
