Re: cannot compile

Due to the limited space on 1 CD and the fact that very few newbies would need or want to compile code, the C compiler and associated tools is not included. They are found in the build-essential package.

Re: Ad block Opera browser - urlfilter.ini file

In recent versions of Opera that file does not exist- you must create it in the ~/.opera directory and put the filter lines in that file:

Code: Select all

sudo tune2fs -c100 /dev/sda1
change "sda1" to whatever partition you are wanting to change the check interval for.

Re: Wireless Printer

I am not sure what you are asking, or if you are really wanting to ask a question of if you are just angry and wanting to rant. Normally, if you would like some help with it you would tell us what you have done so far, what error messages you are getting, the exact make and model of the printer. You...

Re: How do I mount a camera?

OK then. Open a terminal, type "tail -f /var/log/messages" then plug in your camera and turn it on. Post the new messages you see in the terminal to this thread.

Re: OS deleted itself.

Operating systems do not "delete themselves". You must have not completed the install process correctly. When you burned the Live CD did you check the md5sum of the downloaded file and then the md5sum of the burned image? Did you burn as an ISO image and not as a data file? Do you have your BIOS set...

Re: How do I mount a camera?

Did you just try clicking the "Computer" icon and seeing if the device is listed there and then open up its directories?

Re: AMD K6 500

No. At least no modern distro using either Gnome or KDE will be too slow. 512MB is a minimum and the K6 500 too slow. My recommendation for that machine is Puppy Linux. I would recommend VectorLinux Light and AntiX also, but they are both happier with 384MB of RAM, and I'm sorry to say but the K6 50...

Right click on panel, Add to Panel, Brightness Applet - I know it doesn't solve your keyboard problem but hey, it works!

Re: Drivers?

Yes. It does. Play a music CD or MP3 file, open a terminal, type "alsamixer", adjust levels and unmute channels with the "m" key until you get sound. If that still does not work type "inxi -A" in a terminal and post the output to this thread.

Re: C++ IDE

IMHO many students starting out with programming tend to get hung up on the application itself rather truly learning the art of programming. In fact, in many ways learning a language is best done by using a text editor and then when the programs start to get complex with lots of libraries, functions...

Re: kde applications in Mint

No idea. That is the problem with installing KDE apps under Gnome and vice versa. Both require lots of extra libraries/apps for even one small application to function properly under a different desktop environment. As to why those other apps were installed the KDE packager must have had some depende...

"sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst"

look for the line "default #"
change the # (number) to the stanza containing the Mint boot stanza. Numbering starts at 0.

Re: Wireless Fix for Mint 8?

I hope I don't offend anyone on this thread but I feel it is time to make a comment, particularly for the benefit of newbies coming to Mint who read the title of this post and might assume that Ubuntu Karmic (and thus Mint 8) have a general overall wireless problem. This is not the case. The Ubuntu/...
