Re: Two Live Boot OS s on 8gb stick drive

In BIOS, check that secure boot is disabled and legacy usb enabled. See if that makes a difference. I guess I should have been a little more specific about the computer, it's an old HP laptop and I don't think it ever had secure boot & I'm not sure about legacy usb . But, in any case, it's been liv...

Re: Two Live Boot OS s on 8gb stick drive

Hi gittiest and thanks for the advice. Well, it all seemed simple enough. I installed multibootusb, found online user instructions, and every thing went swimmingly, until I tried to boot. I'd get a menu that would allow me to pick either Mate or Cinnamon, then I'd get the LM logo, then a black scree...

(SOLVED) Two Live Boot OS s on 8gb stick drive

I have an unused 8gb stick drive I'd like to use for a live boot device. Would it be ok to split it into two 4gb partitions and put Mate OS in one partition and Cinnamon OS in the other? Thanks.

(SOLVED) Mate vs Cinnamon & External Monitor

Hi all, I'm hoping someone can offer some advice w/external monitor issues. For some time now I've been trying both Mate & Cinnamon 19.2 on my old win7 HP laptop and I'm starting to think that Mate is probably a better option because it does appear to use less resources than Cinnamon and this laptop...

(SOLVED) Timeshift Snapshots

Can older Timeshift Snapshots be deleted or are they all linked together, i.e., incremental, and they are all needed for recovery? I might need to free up some space and was just wondering if it's ok to just delete older snapshots.
Thanks.

(SOLVED)Re: Linux Mint on a MAC

I really do appreciate all the input from everyone. As soon as I'm sure she's transferred all her important stuff to the new mac and is comfortable with me doing experimental things with the old one I'll start playing around with it.
Thanks again.

Re: Linux Mint on a MAC

Thank you all very much for the replies. Per catweazle's suggestion I've found a number of helpful articles & videos. It is an iMac, 1tb drive, dual core, 64bit, 8gb, w/a dvd drive & sd card slot (don't think it's ever been used), it was pretty quick when new & for it's day, but now so loaded down w...

(SOLVED)Linux Mint on a MAC

Hi. I will have an opportunity in the very near future to inherent a older model 27" dual core 8gb MAC. Yes, it may be old and slow by today's standards but so am I so no problem there! I think I might want to try and eventually install Linux Cinnamon or Mate on it. Is this a good forum for advise o...

Re: Which Mint distro is best for;

Hi. I have a 10yr old HP laptop with only 3gb of ram. I have Mate & Cinnamon, both 19.2 64 bit, installed on usb stick drives and I've been alternating between the two for the last several weeks just to see what differences there might be and really other than the look of the desktop I can't tell mu...

Re: Screwed up while resizing swap - please help

Hi. Hope you got it all back ok! Just be aware that the newer Linux versions by default, I think, establish a swap file of some predetermined size ( i.e. cinnamon set up a 2gb swap file on my 8gb laptop ) so you don't really need a swap partition unless you just want one. And, a swap file is much ea...

Re: HDD Sleep

Are they internal or external usb? I know if a drive is external you can use Disks to power it off. However, to re-start it you have to unplug and re-plug the usb cable, or at least that's the only way I've found to do it. I'm using Mate right now and I don't see the unmount or remount option in Dis...

(SOLVED) LM Mate "Drop all elevated privileges"

Hi. I'm hoping someone can answer this question. I'm playing around a little with Mate now after several weeks w/Cinnamon. On several occasions over the last few days a small key icon has popped up in the lower right corner (the system tray/notification area in windows ) w/a dialogue box that says "...

(SOLVED)How to change swappiness

Hi all. I've been researching for a while how to make changes to the swap file swappiness value. My old HP win7 laptop has only 3gb of ram and an SSD so I'd like to try an lessen writes to the SSD. I've been playing with temporary swappiness changes but would like to try some on a more permanent bas...

Re: Is Terminal Knowledge Necessary

As you can see real the answer here is a little yes but fortunately more no! You don't need to know it but it can and will come in handy at some point. With just six weeks in I have found myself using terminal commands more and more just because I'm a control freak and I want to know how things work...

Re: MATE or Cinammon?

I have tried running Cinammon in a dual boot with with Windows 10 but I am wondering whether MATE might be a better choice after reading it is a more stable version. I intend to install VirtualBox for Windows 10 on the Linux drive, primarily to run a couple of programs that there is no alternative ...
