Xfce 20/VirtualBox Auto-resize Guest Display not working!

Hi. I hope someone out there can offer a suggestion or two on a problem I'm having with Full Screen mode and bidirectional clip board & drag and drop in Xfce 20/VirtualBox. I've installed Xfce along with Mate & Cinnamon on two different computers & host os's and everything seems to work ok in all ex...

Re: Timeshift restore questions

Should be a new topic, but I'd start new, I view VMs as disposable. If you did a timeshift restore of LM19.3 to a LM20 install you'd end up with LM19.3. Of course the proper answer would be commit to LM on bare metal :) You can't restore your settings from 19.3 to 20 using Timeshift Snapshots. If t...

Re: Timeshift restore questions

Hi. I've got another newbie question if you don't mind. I'm running Cinnamon 19.3 in VirtualBox and save TimeShift snapshots to a USB ext. drive. I've just installed Cinnamon 20 in VB and so far everything seems to work as well as in 19.3. Is it possible, or even advisable, to restore 19.3 settings ...

Re: Virtualbox 6.1 on iMac Core 2 Duo machine

Just out of curiosity to see how Mate 20 would boot in VB I installed it and it takes as long if not longer than Cinnamon to boot! I wondered that since it was suppose less resource hungry than Cinnamon it might load faster! Apparently things don't work that way, oh well, time to move on! :?

Re: Replace Laptop every x years?

Since laptops have a limited lifespan and hard drives can go bad without warning (correct me if I'm wrong), does anyone just replace laptops every x years? What would x be? Or do you wait for errors to start occurring? Hi. Just my two cents worth. I have an 11 yo hp g50 laptop in which I replaced t...

Suggest you don't do that. In timeshift settings, on the users tab check the radio button to 'include hidden items' for /home/you.
Hi. Ok, I've gotta' ask a newbie question here, why wouldn't you also include /root? Thanks.

Re: Virtualbox 6.1 on iMac Core 2 Duo machine

Thanks. I wouldn't exactly call in sorted out but it's probably something can live with for now. After re-reading your original post, I suspect a key difference in our two machines is the fact that your host is LM 20, if my understanding is correct, and mine is still osx High Sierra. It's not the fa...

Re: Even with Linux Mint Should I Use Old Laptop or Get New PC

Hi. I would also suggest replacing the hdd with an ssd. I have a 10+ yr old HP laptop (that I'm on now) in which I replaced the ailing 250gb hdd with a 250gb ssd and then win7 with LM Mate 19.3. It boots in about 30 second and works great! But with only 3gb of ram I do have to pay a bit more attenti...

Re: Virtualbox 6.1 on iMac Core 2 Duo machine

Hi, I have an older core2duo iMac (2008) with a 2.4GHz 2 core chip, 4GB RAM. I'm running LM 20 Cinnamon 64 bit. I installed VirtualBox 6.1 with LM 19.3 as guest OS. It is taking just about exactly 2 minutes to boot so something is not right. It's not LM20, so not a 100% comparison. I still haven't ...

Re: Why does Mate have two different System Monitor Preferences?

You're brilliant, that is exactly how I did it several week ago! But for the last couple of days now I've racked my brain trying to remember how I got those windows there but apparently I'd promptly forgotten about applets as soon as it was done, obviously I don't use them very much. So, thank you v...

(SOLVED)Why does Mate have two different System Monitor Preferences?

Hi. I've discovered that Mate 19.3, at least on my old laptop, has two different versions of System Monitor Preferences. If you open the System Monitor you can get to the regular simple version of Preferences by clicking Edit then Preferences. The second version of Preferences is depicted in the att...

Re: Virtualbox 6.1 on iMac Core 2 Duo machine

Hi. My wife use to run parrallels & win7 on this this thing up until last year with little or no problem that I recall. I've got it now and I've installed VirtuaBox 6.1 and Linux Cinnamon 20 and while it seems to run ok it takes for ever to boot into Linux, between 5 & 6 minutes! I'm trying to find ...

Change Function Key action in LM Mate?

Hi. I have an old hp Win7 laptop which I repurposed to run LM Mate. When it was Win7 the function keys F7 & F8 could be used to change display brightness with use of the fn key. This no longer works with LM Mate. If anyone has an idea how I can restore the display brightness control to F7 & F8 I'd r...

Re: Time clock problems

As stated above live booting Linux w/cd or usb drive on a windows machine ( & I think or imac also) will cause this time shift. I experienced it on both my windows laptops. The solution is to either change the time if it really bugs you, ignore it or use a live boot w/persistence as suggested by kse...

Re: My iMac can default boot to external usb drive?

This is not likely to be a problem. The mac stores its preference for startup disk in parameter RAM or NVRAM. You can reset these by restarting and pressing command-option-P-R as described here . I've seen the startup disk preference get messed up during a crash. Jamie On behalf of DaleRaynor and m...

Virtualbox 6.1 on iMac Core 2 Duo machine

Hi. I was wondering if anyone might have an idea if an iMac Core 2 Duo with 8gb of ram might have enough power to run Virtualbox 6.1 & Linux Cinnamon 19.x or 20.X? I don'd expect or need blazingly fast speed as most of my computing these days is very basic, email, web searches, photos, music, etc. B...
