cinnamon does not start on boot

Hi guys, I can't find anything on the net on this specific issue I've been experiencing. I have setup a tigervnc server on LAN which has been working well and I can remote desktop to it from other workstations on LAN. However, when I had to move the server off the LAN, I cannot seem to be able to st...

[SOLVED] tty1 login problem

Hi guys, I have installed xtigervnc server which runs just fine, I can access it from another PC over the network without any problems. However, now I had to remove the server from the network and when I now attach a physical monitor to the server, it just shows (even on reboot): Linux Mint 19.3 Tri...

Re: Samba mounted 'drives' order in Nemo

I could do that, but it will be far from ideal due to:

- it will mix folders and volumes and will make it confusing to the user
- use up quite a little bit of space in the LHS bar by duplicating all network entries (I have closer to a dozen network drives).

Samba mounted 'drives' order in Nemo

I have a samba server which is accessed from a LM 19.3. I mount the drives in /etc/fstab as follows: //192.168.1.100/DATA /media/bru/DATA cifs uid=bru,gid=bru,credentials=/usr/as/samba/mysamba.cnf 0 0 //192.168.1.100/SAM1 /media/bru/SAM1 cifs uid=bru,gid=bru,credentials=/usr/as/samba/mysamba.cnf 0 0...

Re: Accessing the same PC on either wireless or wired connection

Unfortunately though that reply makes not much sense. "lo" is a local interface, only available for communication between processes on your own machine. You are here referring to accessing the machine from the outside and as such "lo" has nothing to do with anything here. Even if it does not make m...

Re: Accessing the same PC on either wireless or wired connection

Clearly only useable if you use only one of the connections at a time. Thanks rene, but as I mentioned at the start of the threat, the configuration I set up with the following command on loopback has been working well for me. I'm new to LM, but I can change from wired+wireless to wireless (and bac...

Re: Accessing the same PC on either wireless or wired connection

You can click the network icon at the lower right to edit connections. -that's Network Manager. Thanks zcot, but loopback is specifically excluded from being managed by NetworkManager. DEVICE TYPE STATE CONNECTION lo loopback unmanaged -- Besides, I'm also after a scripting solution without relying...

Re: Accessing the same PC on either wireless or wired connection

I expect said nature of the problem to simply be that OP didn't know about <hostname>.local. Quite a few don't. That's a great hint, thank you guys! - I did not know about this! It may fix the samba related use case. However, exactly the same laptop also runs a redmine server, so I don't think I ca...

Accessing the same PC on either wireless or wired connection

I have a laptop which can use either wireless or wired (or both) connections to LAN. It also has samba configured so external devices can access its filesystem. The laptop will obviously have different IP address on LAN dependent on which interface is currently up. Question: what would be the best p...

[SOLVED] Netplan vs legacy networking in LM19/20

I've been reading on basic networking (based on Ubuntu) and the book said that /etc/network/interfaces configuration files have been replaced by Netplan. I also noticed that when I use /etc/network/interfaces in LM19.3, the system does not give me any warnings as to its deprecation. Can anybody clar...

Why adding a bridge to /etc/network/interfaces breaks my internet connection?

I'm trying to add a bridge to an existing well functioning 19.2 desktop system. I have the current /etc/network/interfaces file which binds the same IP address to both wireless and wired adapters: auto lo iface lo inet loopback post-up /sbin/ip addr add 192.168.1.202/32 dev lo When I append a block ...

Re: Visibility issues with Mint-Y-Dark theme in Cinnamon

Oh, yes, thank you smurphos, it did the trick for KVM!

However, krusader from KDE is invisible with various icon themes I tried. Is it fixable?

Visibility issues with Mint-Y-Dark theme in Cinnamon

I have been using Mint-Y-Dark theme for a few weeks now and it is really easier on my eyes. The problem is that although with most applications it's fine, for some such as for instance KVM's Virtual Machine Manager, some buttons on the application's toolbar are virtually invisible. Here's an example...

Safely download and install deb packages from other Linux distros

What's the safest way to download and install a specific binary package from an official repository of another Linux distro? I do not want to use a PPA artefact as I suspect it is less secure, so I thought perhaps if there's a way to add a repository url just like the one apt-get is using to get inf...

[SOLVED] Help with samba server hardware options

I'm trying to build a small office/home samba server on a linuxmint system as a standalone box. I settled on a RAID10 configuration with 4x 4TB HDDs connected with Dell H700 controller. Now, for the last part I need to select an appropriate CPU, and I'm struggling with choices. Any suggestions will ...

adding shortcuts to launcher panel - programmatically

Hi guys, I am trying to automate creation of a clean LM image with as little manual (ie GUI) manipulations as possible. I can't seem to find or figure myself how to add shortcuts to the launcher panel programmatically. Suppose I have a program.desktop file created and correctly configured and residi...
