hardware firewall and samba server

Hi guys, I would really appreciate your feedback on the hardware architecture for a small office's LAN. All PCs are running Linux Mint desktops, and here's how it looks: 3 desktops (on and off depending on user) 1 server with redmine on an old and slow laptop, with ports 80/443 open to internet (alw...

Re: check if particular deb file package already is NOT installed

Joe, I understand what the script is doing except for a few things I highlighted in bold below. Can you be so kind to explain what those statements are doing? ((${#installed[@]} > 0)) || { >&2 echo "error getting package list"; exit 1; } [[ -f "$deb" ]] || { >&2 echo "'$deb' not found"; continue; } ...

Re: check if particular deb file package already is NOT installed

Far out, thank you, I'll give it a go!

Lol, I was thinking there may be something like a single command check giving a yes/no output...

Anyways, thanks again!

Re: Download and install linux kernel on offline machine

upgrade from, I presume judging from the package name, the 18.04 HWE kernel, to the next Ubuntu version. Again, I presume it's going to be 20? or 18.05? I am happy with the HWE kernel, I would rather not touch the script every time there's a new Ubuntu upgrade. Something similar for the LTE name wit...

Thank you for that. It's not connected to the apt-cache so I will need something that may work.

check if particular deb file package already is NOT installed

I have a folder with 500+ deb files I need to check if any of them have not been installed on the current system. I understand that running something like: sudo dpkg -i --skip-same-version --refuse-downgrade *.deb would tell us if the package is already installed. Two problems with this in my case: ...

Re: Download and install linux kernel on offline machine

I'm bumping this question up as the technical problem was a bit buried in the above discussion I cannot add much to. Here you go:

Thank you gm10! Is there a generalised version of the command that can survive the upgrade up from ubuntu 18.04 (LM 19)?

Code: Select all

apt download linux-generic-hwe-18.04

Re: [SOLVED] Icon browser in LM19.3

Just for the record as I found the LM icon browser. It's called XAppIconChooser.

However, I'm not really sure when and how to invoke it as it is not a standalone application and is context based. So the gtk-3 solution is more user friendly at this stage for me.

Re: Download and install linux kernel on offline machine

Thanks Pjotr, Well, I am after a solution that I can script for automated execution. Hence on my end, changing the kernel version numbers manually is not going to work. Is there anything more generalized? From the link: For example, in order to install kernel 5.3.0-23 (64-bit) in an offline Linux Mi...

[SOLVED] Icon browser in LM19.3

Hi guys, I accidentally stumbled on an icon browser application in Linux Mint 19.3. Unfortunately after a system crash I cannot find it any longer. It basically was showing the same structure as shown on this page (different theme though): https://askubuntu.com/questions/695796/view-list-of-all-avai...

Re: Download and install linux kernel on offline machine

This is so weird, I have just installed Mint 19.3 with the 5.0.0-32-generic kernel as shown by the uname -r command . The Update Manager requires version 5.3.0.28 for upgrading, however when I run the following, all I get is files for version 4.15.0-76. Has something changed in v19.3 or am I doing s...

Re: sound jitter when using windows guest in kvm

Hi. I doubt I can help because I don't know kvm but I can ask a question. How much ram do you have? I assume you may have tried rebooting or closing other applications? I had a similar thing happen the other day while playing a video on youtube in vitualbox/linux mint on a w10 laptop w/8gb ram and ...

sound jitter when using windows guest in kvm

Hi guys, I spent the whole day today trying to find an answer to this problem to no avail. It's a well reported issue and I did not see any resolution to it apart from ditching kvm for virtualbox. So when I'm running a Windows 7 guest, I have sound but it's jittery with continuous interruptions, so ...

Try kvm instead of virtualbox. It runs significantly faster for the reasons documented very widely elsewhere.

I mean "significantly".

Immutable VMs with KVM

Hi guys, Can you help me to find an 'immutable' flag in KVM? I'm trying to set up VMs which are destroyable on shutdown with no changes to be saved and the next run is automatically carried out from the immutable image. A kind of a read-only flag. KVM has a readonly flag, but it does not work with v...

No worries, I did not even suspect a thing like sudoer existed before I had to debug and read a few sources. With an easy answer that worked I would not have learnt anything! ;)

Re: custom log files location and permissions

thanks ciniset, I was kind of thinking about the same approach. What I was not very clear about is any security implications if I used sudo sh -c when using passwordless with sudoer . Am I correct thinking that if I wanted to get the above echo command to sudoer, i'd have to grant passwordless right...
