Backups and Snapshots Question [SOLVED]

I have a spare partition on a different disk other than the disk I intend to to install Linux. The partition is formatted NTFS. My question is can I run Timeshift and select this latter partition on a different disk to store the snapshots; same question for Backups. TIA.

MATE or Cinammon? [SOLVED]

I have tried running Cinammon in a dual boot with with Windows 10 but I am wondering whether MATE might be a better choice after reading it is a more stable version. I intend to install VirtualBox for Windows 10 on the Linux drive, primarily to run a couple of programs that there is no alternative i...

Re: Wine Security

I use VHDs (Virtual Hard Drives) which might be best for you if you have enough space on the internal storage. These can be dynamically allocated i.e. only take up as much space on the host as necessary. If you have enough space, I'd give the VM a VHD of 25GB to accommodate a Windows 7 installation...

Re: Wine Security

Thank you Sinnis for your very kind input and after considering your views and bearing in mind that I too need a couple, maybe three programs that I need to run in Windows think I will go down the VirtualBox route. I have 8gb available so hopefully that will be enough. How big a partition should I s...

Re: Wine Security

I've never considered wine security an issue, I say go for it (don't run .exes you get in an email). IIRC, the wine website's statement on security refers to one bad thing long ago and far away/ OK Femur I misinteprented your message; it came across to me as a warning against using Wine. So thank y...

Re: Wine Security

Neither positive thinking nor bad vibes make any difference. The only way to find out whether Wine suits your needs is to roll up your sleeves and give it a try. If it doesn't, it's YOUR choice whether to adapt to Linux or stay with Windows. I totally agree with you pbear as what I am trying to do ...

Re: Wine Security

If you are determined to only use Windows or Windows compatible programmes on Linux you are doomed to failure. So unless you are prepared to consider Linux equivalents to the things you are used to you might as well give up now. In what way would it fail? I will be trying to use LInux in the main u...

Re: Wine Security

I do not know much about Virtual box but will look into it. Would this be a full blown install of Windows 10 inside Linux? Don't know anything about it but it sounds maybe a possibility but I had have to get more au fait with Linux first.

Re: Re-install of Linux Mint 19.2

Best is to delete the unwanted partition in Windows . So delete those two partitions in Disk 2 I have earmarked for Mate and Cinammon? I assume I say will do say a first install of MATE on Partition G and get that up front and running. Then using the Cinammon boot disk install that on partition H, ...

[SOLVED]Re-install of Linux Mint 19.2

While trying to install Linux Mint 19.2 MATE on my system calready containing Linus Mint 19.2 Cinammon and Windows 10 I buggered everything up. After sorting things involving a re-install of Windows 10 and then restoring it with a Acronis Image I am now back to where I was before I did my first Dual...

Re: Difference between Timeshift Snapshot and Backup

FWIW, you can do what you wanted, i.e., have triple boot with Windows, Cinnamon and MATE. By default, the last system installed would control Grub, but boot both of the others. Ironically it was whilst I was doing this I buggered up the system! Sorry about this and will repost as you advise. ...

Wine Security

I have been using Linux Mint 19.2 for about a week on two machines, a desktop in dual boot and standalone on a small netbook. Now I have ascertained that some of my programs will not run in Linux form and it nescessitates using an add on like Wine. I have read about security issues using Wine and wo...

Re: Difference between Timeshift Snapshot and Backup

Thank you all for your informative replies. I have to admit yesterday I made a big mistake in trying to install MATE on the same PC as Cinammon and Windows 10 and completed corrupted everything as I did not fully comprehend that the Grub menu was written to the MBR on my SSD drive where Windows 10 i...
