Re: Problem playing CD & DVD - M7 XFCE

aplay -l (small case L) lspci You can copy/paste the output of those commands back here, and we MAY be able to help . . :) Ok here you go lads. What can you tell me. Btw I backed up the windows drivers before I gave the pc over to Linux, is there anyway to use windows drivers in Linux? ~ $ aplay -l...

Floppy Disc Icon on Destop (unmounted)

My mates pc is showing an annoying floppy icon on his desktop even though its not being used and is unmounted. I edited out the floppy from his fstab but it still shows. Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Rob

Firefox window too big (goes off screen)

Like I said above, the firefox window thinks its on a 17" screen (or bigger). My mates pc is only around 14" LCD, I changed the screen resolution down to 800*600 (from memory), that seemed to fix the screen size for XFCE itself but not Firefox. Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Base requirements for xfce...

You could also try Knoppix or DSL. They should fly on that system. Try Knoppix first, if it doesn't work well enough (can't think why) then try DSL (Damn Smaal Linux).

Good luck,

Re: Problem playing CD & DVD - M7 XFCE

Codecs are included. What do you mean "won't play"? When you insert the CD or DVD, does an application or question box pop up on screen? Can he play a music CD at least? What happens when you put a data CD in the CDROM drive? When you use the file manager ("Computer" icon) can you see the disc in t...

Re: Harddrive Access As Root Only. Help!

Thanks but it didn't work. I might just delete this partition and expand the existing Linux partition to take up its space.

Why Are There 4 File Managers installed?

I have 4 file mangers installed on my system by default, why so many?

nautilus, thunar, dolphin, konquerer maybe count them as 3.5 as Konquerer doubles as a browser (does anybody use it for browsing anymore?) but why the duplication? Does one file manager not do it all?

Re: Vote for Debian base as opposed to Ubuntu

I think if it ain't broke then don't try to fix it. Ubuntu might be percieved as the Microsoft of the Linux world for their practices etc but they have done the most for popularising Linux and making it user friendly. They might not have the best theme/layout but hardware support is ace and with Min...

Re: Not including multimedia codecs by default in Mint8

I'm for in. I have installed Mint7 XFCE on a friends computer and he has a slow dodgy net connection, which he is stuck with. It would be more trouble than its worth to install the codecs and make the distro worthless to them and having to choose another. If worried about legal matters how about thi...

Re: Harddrive Access As Root Only. Help!

On the Ubuntu forum someone told me to try:

Code: Select all

sudo chown -R myusername:myusername /media/sda3
I tried this using /dev/sda3 instead of /media as thats what partition editer says it is mounted at but it didn't work. Any suggestions where I go from here?

Re: Harddrive Access As Root Only. Help!

Its a partition on the windows C: drive. I know theres nothing on the fstab. It should show the existing Linux partition (think its ext3), the swap file and the new ext2 partition.

Re: Goodbye Vista & Windows 7. Hello Linux Mint!

I haven't given up windows completely but everyyear it gets closer and closer. I've tried Ubuntu but didn't like the layout & didn't find it user friendly at all. Then I found Freespire (RIP) built on Ubuntu and it rocked and now Linux Mint, which is even better than FS. Love the Mint menu, hardware...
