Connecting a TV to a Computer [Solved]

I have a new System 76 Serval WS computer with Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.3 installed on it. The screen is a 17" 1920 x 1080 and the GPU is NVIDIA (getting that driver installed was fun). My TV is also 1920 x 1080. When I connect the TV to the computer via HDMI and try to mirror the computer screen on t...

Re: How should I mount a new data drive?

The GUI way to create symlinks is to hold down the CTRL and SHIFT keys, left click and drag the file or folder you want to link, and drag them to where you want the link. You can do multiple folders or files by highlighting them, then dragging them to the desired location. Only the new symlinks get...

Re: How should I mount a new data drive?

This is why I don't like video tutorials. Almost always light on substance. It's an inherent limit of the medium. Easy to digest, but low on content. Take a look at this Tutorial ( tweaks ). Explains how to do symlinks also. Thanks for your comments. I agree that a lot of "instructional" videos are...

Re: How should I mount a new data drive?

Thanks! I commented out the superfluous line in fstab and deleted the no longer needed folder in mnt. I rebooted a couple of times to make sure everything worked correctly, which it did. I'll ignore fstab.save file for now on the really odd chance I'll need it and delete it further down the road. It...

Re: How should I mount a new data drive?

OK, I'm a wee bit confused here. First, do I edit the fstab file or the fstab.save. Is the fstab.save file even supposed to be there? It doesn't exist on my other Linux machine. The drive is internal, not external so I'm thinking I need to edit out the /dev/... line, not the one with Data1 in it. Is...

Re: How should I mount a new data drive?

Thank you! No panic yet, just nervous, hence the caution. Here 'tis: jeannie@Laptop1:~$ cat /etc/fstab /etc/fstab: static file system information. # # Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a # device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices # that works ...

Re: How should I mount a new data drive?

I'm reporting back and it's not exactly a happy one. This is the video I found on how to properly mount an internal drive. https://youtu.be/4eza4QYHUJE I followed the directions (or, at least, I think I did) up to the point where I'm supposed to reboot. After rebooting, I had two icons for the drive...

Re: Why Use Linux Mint - Review

English and proofreading - Never proofread your own work. The NZ SeniorNet has been putting up instruction sheets on its website. A classic error I spotted where "curser" had been used. The writer obviously didn't know that the "curser" is the grey haired old bloke using the computer. The "cursor" ...

Re: Shutdown problems - Failed to wait for process: Protocol error

I have an NVIDIA card and it has been happening to me also. I see the same thing on my new laptop with an NVIDIA card I don't get that on my notebook with Mint and integrated graphics. When I shut down, the error message shows up six times almost instanaeously, then message that has "boot" in it sh...

Re: Best Mint for filing taxes

What version of Mint should I download to get the most up to date browsers so I can avoid buying a new windows or mac and still continue operating online in the real world? :P Browsers are not distribution related. In order to get the most up-2-date browser, there are 2 options: - 1 Google Chrome, ...

Re: How should I mount a new data drive?

If the drive is permanently mounted, it would be better to mount it in fstab somewhere useful like /home/you/mynewdrive or wherever you want. I just found where the drive got mounted: the /mnt folder. Perhaps this is what you did. The easiest way to find where a partition is mounted is Disks. OTOH,...

Re: FreeFileSync

I used FreeFileSync in Win 7 and now use it in Mint. I had some problems getting it to work initially but that was mostly due to Linux being so different under the hood than Windows. FreeFileSync has a good forum (https://freefilesync.org/forum/index.php?sid=c58569e325038b7da17ab0a77dd998ef). The fo...

Re: LibreOffice opens only the first page of PDFs

Why not use the PDF reader that comes with Mint? Works better than bloody libre office (which shouldn't open them in the first place since it's total crap with pdfs), however how can I modify the pdf? @GS3's "PDFs aren't intended to be edited" Well, unfortunately whether we like it or not this is w...

so, even after you've manually copied some files to that second drive,
- the FreeFileSync still can't 'see' that second drive ? you still have that second drive, still mounted ?.
Yes, that is true. And the drive is still mounted. Weird, isn't it?

How should I mount a new data drive?

I added an empty data drive to a new laptop (Mint and programs are already installed on a separate, NVMe drive and seems to be working just fine. When I set the new data drive to mount automatically in disks, its icon shows up on the desktop whenever I boot up and I can manually put data into it. Ho...

Re: Printer not printing

I've always given my printers static IP addresses, didn't think about it much, just seemed to be a good idea, done it for years. Now I know why :D How do you do that? Normally one would read the printer manual. And what do you do when the printer manual doesn't say a darned thing about giving the p...
