Re: Printer not printing

I looked at that article and my mind just shut down (there is a reason I posted this in the Newbie Questions forum). I have no idea what to put in those blanks other than my user name. When I look at the print queue in Printers, It has only the job I just sent. If it doesn't print, I delete the job...

Re: Printer not printing

I have a Samsung CLP-415NW laser printer that has been working just fine for the past four months but, today, it went on strike. The printer itself works fine--I just printed out a list supplies directly from the printer--but I can't send a print to the printer. It just goes into the queue, then si...

Re: LibreOffice opens only the first page of PDFs

I would go much further and say PDFs are not intended to be edited... Yes and no. It depends on how the PDF is created and what it's intended use is. PDFs are far more versatile than just documents to be viewed only. A PDF is basically a crossplatform image of a document. PDFs can be created from s...

Re: How to backup Kindle ebook from Amazon

You can go to Amazon and download the books you already bought to a folder on your computer (look under Accounts and Lists, then, under Your Account on Your Content and Devices). You can use any file system you want but, if you are using ext4 on your computer, I would stick with it. Then you can sim...

Re: LibreOffice opens only the first page of PDFs

LibreOffice isn't intended to view or edit regular PDFs. For viewing, you need a PDF reader and for editing, you need an actual PDF editor. If you are creating PDFs in LibreOffice, there is a setting that will embed the LibreOffice document you are exporting to PDF within the PDF. Then, if you open ...

Re: Farewell Linux I hardly knew ye.....

...For Linux systems, as a rule, there is no-one who pre-installs it on any new machine and who sells it ready to use to the end user. All of a sudden the end user finds himself in the position, where he is his own system administrator. All the installation and configuration work, which Apple does ...

Re: Open a file from the panel? [solved]

Sadly, drag and drop doesn't work in Mint. ???? I do it every day with 19.3 Cinnamon, and also with 18.3 Cinnamon. I drag files on top of a folder and drop them there, and they stay there. Never tried to do that in a message reply, will make that attempt now. Duck and Bunnie.jpg worked like a charm...

Re: Creating a shortcut to an xed file on the panel

There are a few ways of doing this in Cinnamon. It's not as straightforward as it should be - i.e as in Mate will allows drag and drop. 1) Add a custom shortcut as a grouped window list pinned app (assumes using the default Modern layout for Cinnamon) Right click on menu applet > configure > menu >...

Re: Open a file from the panel?

I tried following the directions in the link in the first post and couldn't get any of it to work. I'm guessing a step is missing due to the writer assuming people already knew to do that step.

BTW, the video was a joke.

Re: Amount of Space Needed for Timeshift [Solved]

Be aware that there are a number of 'standard' folders in /home, like downloads or pictures, that you can't delete. Delete them and they will reappear at the next boot. Smurphos did post on how to get rid of them permanently a month or so ago. Thanks for that heads up. I was just thinking I would j...

I was about to make a similar post (I also wanted to be able to link folders as well as files from the panel) so there's at least two inquiring minds who want to know.

Re: Amount of Space Needed for Timeshift [Solved]

I have /home on its own partition. That has caused some issues with backups because all the configuration and other hidden files are there, "junking" up my backups There is a setting in timeshift to tell it to backup the hidden files in /home, i.e. all your config files. The main advantage of a sep...

Re: Amount of Space Needed for Timeshift

The size of the 'backup' is determined by the used space in the / partition (excluding /home ), first time around it will copy everything, thereafter only that which is new or changed. With a 512GB nvme drive (assuming no windows), I'd put both / and / home partitions on it. You could afford to be ...

Amount of Space Needed for Timeshift [Solved]

Is the total amount of drive space taken up by Timeshift backups determined by the amount of data being backed up or by the total size of the / partition being backed up? The reason I'm asking is I'm about to get a new laptop that will get a 512GB Samsung 970 Pro installed for the boot drive (I know...

Re: Kernel updates - a gentle moan!

Unlike when I was using Windwoes, I just don't worry about updates. When the little icon in the panel shows I have one, I just choose a convenient time to install it (usually within a few minutes of when I see it). It takes far less time for this than even a quick restroom break (or change socks?). ...
