[Solved] Advice on Known to be Good Page Scanner

Am looking for a replacement for my plustek OpticSlim m12 Plus. This is classified as a mobile scanner, but I use on my desk in front of my keyboard for receipts and various quick scanning. I have used this with Mint and Ubuntu for years, but as of late it has become unreliable. Simple Scan will cra...

Are you using Thinkfan with an X230? Share your config?

Am trying to quiet down my Lenovo X230. Am running Mint 17.3 Cinnamon on an i7 with 16GB of RAM and an SSD. Steps I've take so far: 1) used compressed air to blow out intake area/fans 2) Updated BIO to latest 3) Changed BISO setting for "Adaptive Thermal Management" to "Balanced." There is a program...

Re: Apps anyone?

Commercial apps are a bit of a hodge podge, but Streaming music wise, Spotify works (am listening to it right now), and you can find details on how to install here: https://www.spotify.com/us/download/linux/, and per the last responder, you can run NetFlix in Chrome per these instructions: http://ww...

Re: Questions about Windows programs on Linux

@M0em, thanks for chiming in. My reason for jumping in on this thread, was that there was a new user who started it and they were looking for some experience share. I personally choose to run some Windows programs in Mint and feel safe doing so.. I just wanted to add that into the conversation.

Re: Questions about Windows programs on Linux

I'm just being practical.... One always must measure risk/reward. From a risk perspective, the reality is that vector for most Windows malware is the browser or add-ons like Acrobat or Flash. Personally, I think that If one uses a legit/legal version of a widely used Windows program that comes from ...

Re: Questions about Windows programs on Linux

Just another perspective here... I've been using Linux as my daily desktop OS since 2010... Because I've found it impossible to do everything I need to 100% natively in Mint, I use VirtualBox, VMWare, Wine, also PlayOnLinux. There are many excellent alternatives to Windows programs, but sometimes it...

You may want to consider using Clonezilla... this is a good one to have as a Live USB, and makes cloning very reliable and streamlined: http://clonezilla.org/downloads.php

Libre Office TTF and Antialiasing?

I often have to move files back and forth from MS Office, where recent versions will use Calibri as their default font. If I use Libre Office writer, the onscreen display of Calbria at 14 pts or less is jaggy because of the bit mapping detailed here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/594976/how-to-get-...

Re: Can I change screen res from a keyboard shortcut?

I do this with using the MyLaunch Cinnamon applet http://markbokil.com/downloads/mylauncher/help.php?appname=mylauncher&version=1.0.7 but you could do it from a keyboard shortcut just as easily... The key here is xrandr and here are my various shortcuts.. the shortcut would be everthing to the right...

Re: Can't Launch Screenlocker from Kybrd Shortcut 17.3 [Solv

In my case, I didn't have to create a new user. I went into the screensaver settings applet and changed from the default screen locker to "Stars." At that point, the keyboard shortcut worked. It als worked when I changed it back to "Screen Locker."

Can't Launch Screenlocker from Keyboard Shortcut 17.3

After upgrading, "ctrl + shift + l" doesn't work anymore. I suspect something else maybe conflicting with this. If I run lock screen from the menu, it works.

What is the command line equivalent of lock screen? I'm assuming I can just reassign this to ctrl + shift + l.

Thanks, but that doesn't deal with the padding issues (e.g. spacing around the panel icons).

How to control the panel icon padding for notification area?

Just upgraded to 17.3 and have noticed that the tray area icons are not evenly spaced and some have a lot more padding than others. I've tried a couple of different themes. http://pix.toile-libre.org/upload/thumb/1449688329.png I see that there's a cinnamon.css file in the themes folder for each the...

Re: Force a resolution on your second screen.

Not sure about how relevant this is with nVidia, but I use some XRandR scripts to do this kind of thing... This link may help: http://askubuntu.com/a/662567 There is a front end for XRandR called ARandR that can write the XRandR syntax for you: https://christian.amsuess.com/tools/arandr/ I often use...

Re: Living dangerously: Backing up files and system

I clone my drive with Clonezilla every month of so (and store the clone in a fire safe), but also highly recommend an offsite/cloud type solution. I use CrashPlan (http://crashplan.com) which is Mint friendly. I have it running in the background and it's continually backing up /home for me...

Where are the VPN Details Stored for Cinnamon on 17.2?

I regularly use various VPN connection using the standard Network Manager panel applet. At some point over the last few days, one of my OpenVPN based connections lost it's certificate password which I will assume is my private key password. I have very good backups, including a recent system clone i...

How do I Get Cinnamon to Open Terminal in Current folder?

Am running 17.2 Cinnamon and use the Nemo's ability to open a terminal pane (F4). At some point, I seem to have lost the functionality of Terminal opening in the current folder. Right now, regardless of where Nemo is, it opens to the top of my 'home" directory.
