How risky is it to install XFCE on stable Cinnamon 17.1

I want to play around with XFCE on my Cinnamon system. Everything is working great in Cinnamon, so don't want to muck it up.
- If this is NOT risky, what's easiest way to install.

Re: Recommended Recording Software

You can also try SimpleScreenRecorder http://www.maartenbaert.be/simplescreenrecorder/ or Vokoscreen http://www.kohaupt-online.de/hp/. I really like SimpleScreenRecorder and does OpenGL.

Re: Canon Pixma printers not working?

so Kendoori; whilst we wait to hear back from Thommo; Canon supply this link http://www.canon.co.uk/Support/Consumer_Products/PIXMA_Printer_Wireless_Connection_Setup/ that allows you to choose your printer; and then it tells you how to make a wireless connection between printer and router ........ ...

Re: Canon Pixma printers not working?

I've had some issues with my Pixma when trying to connect directly. Mine is CloudPrint ready, as is the MG4200 series. Because of that, I was able to use this solution: https://www.niftiestsoftware.com/cups-cloud-print/ This basically wires CUPS to make it connect to the printer over the net. Works ...

Can I Customize How Chrome Apps Show when Minimized to Panel

I'm using Rebecca/Cinnamon. I have several web apps that I use that I've turned into Chrome apps that I launch from the panel. I've created shortcuts for them and they work properly. I would like to differentiate them visually after launch when they are minimized. Right now, they all look alike Chro...

Re: scanner compatability

Much is dependent on the scanner itself. Are you scanning as photo or text? I find text works well even at 150 dpi

Re: scanner compatability

I use SimpleScan all the time to save to PDF. After scanning, just click on the file type selector in lower left.

You may also want to try Gscan2pdf (http://gscan2pdf.sourceforge.net/)

Re: [Q:]What are you using for Time Tracking?

Thanks Xenopeek. TimeCamp (TimeCamp.com) has a usable .deb based client and fits the bill. Arguably much better than Toggl :-)

[Q:]What are you using for Time Tracking?

I had been using Toggl, but their latest Linux desktop client is very weak. If possible, I'd like something that syncs with the cloud, and is also available from the web and Android mobile devices. I need to track time against customer projects. Hamster covers the desktop basics, but would love to r...

Re: skype external webcam

Is your webcam plugged into a hub, or directly into your machine? I had issues, but have gotten it to work reliably by plugging directly into my laptop's USB port. You may want experiment with a different USB port.

Re: How to virtualize an existing system?

If you have a VMWare esxi setup, you may be able to do this with the free VMWare Standalone converter, but you will need to run this under Windows.

Otherwise, this procedures shows you how to do it with Clonezilla: http://www.linux.org/threads/physical-t ... lbox.7248/

I realize you are asking for native tools, but TeamViewer (http://teamviewer.com) is worth considering, and it's free for personal use. It does use Wine, but is very well executed under Linux.

Nemo Hangs When Opening Certain Folders in 17.1

I'm trying to open some folders off of my home/document tree and have discovered that certain folders will hang upon opening (they just have standard documents in there... PDfs, .XLS etc...) This problem is Nemo specific, as I'm able to open the same folder with no issues in Thunar or Double Command...

Re: Cheese/Guvcview cannot find video device

I recently had a similar issue with my built-in camera but also an external one. I upgraded my kernel to 3.13.0-37-generic and my system worked. It's a long shot, but worth trying (upgrading your kernel).

Re: An easy question about Cheese.

I'm finding that in Mint 17 I can't record video via Cheese. My camera is properly detected for photos, but Cheese crashes when I switch to video mode. This appears to be a very common problem. An alternative to Cheese, would be GUVCView, which you can find out about here: http://guvcview.sourceforg...

[Solved] USB Ports Not Working, but work fine with Live USB

The problem got worse, and lost connectivity to my sound card (internal and external) and WiFi was also not working. I was prepared to use the nuclear option and reinstall. After several hours of futzing and googling, and I discovered post related to the "dummy output" device that was appearing in p...

USB Ports Not Working, but work fine with Live USB

Am running Mint Qiana Cinnamon on my Lenovo X230. Everything was working properly until I did a Clonezilla backup today. I did a direct disk to disk clone via USB, and rebooted into the source hard drive. Upon reboot, my Microsoft wireless keyboard (w/ USB dongle) and my Logitech wireless mouse (w /...

Re: How do you make a custom screen resolution in Linux Mint

Are you using VMWare or VirtualBox? If VirtualBox have you installed "Guest Additions"? or if "VMWare tools?" With either of these installed Mint can auto resize to whatever resolution.
