Re: Very confusing graphics problem

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I just want to clarify something here: the machine is not "new" in the sense of "new from the factory" but rather "new to my hands". It was running Mint 7 without any trouble. The only thing I changed was the hard drive: from my machine, running Mint 9, to this one,...

Very confusing graphics problem

So, I switched hard drives between two machines. My regular hard drive in the new machine now gives me a graphics error. Every time I start it, I receive this message that "Ubuntu is now in low graphics mode" and it asks me to tick off some options. Then it restarts. Upon restarting, I scan for avai...

Re: Unofficial Post Your Linux Mint Desktop Thread

Thank you, oscar799!

Also, is it just me, or is Mint 9 more responsive to graphical changes? I often have to turn desktop effects off and on again, switching screen resolutions and such, and that used to give me residual problems. On 9, though, not even a hiccup.

Oops! What Did I Do? [Fixed]

So, playing around with the StartUp-Manager, I ended up losing my startup screen - even after reverting it back to the default settings - and now have this (ignore the reflection of the handsome gentleman on the screen): http://i33.tinypic.com/mwbk8p_th.jpg The retro look wouldn't bother me so much ...

Re: Linux Mint 9 from a persistent Live USB

However, a SSD is fastest of all because it has a real controller and 0.25ms access time. I picked up an OCZ Vertex 32gb SSD on sale on Amazon last spring for $96. Corsair Nova Series 32 GB SSD is currently available on Amazon for $93. The funny thing about this is you reminded me of this article ,...

Re: Linux Mint 9 from a persistent Live USB

I presumed this would put some wear and tear on the Flash drive. The purpose of this thread was to compare performance between running from the hard drive and running from a persistent Live USB. It also opens up possibilities with regards to having to use a machine that isn't yours, for example, for...

Linux Mint 9 from a persistent Live USB

I've been experimenting more with running from a persistent Live USB, comparing it to the hard drive experience. I've been doing it often enough that I eventually changed the boot order to USB first, then hard drive, then CD/DVD drive. I'm trying out Mint 9 on an 8GB Flash drive as I type this. Keep...

Re: Firefox issues

I hate to be that guy who suggests trying a different browser, but I've been using Chrome for Linux and have been really happy with it. It's faster, lighter, and now has all the extensions I used to use in Firefox (no more AdBlock via Privoxy!). It's become my default browser. I recommend you take i...

I wasn't aware Sir Elton John had freed them. :P
I'm puzzled, what does that mean?
At the risk of being humorlessly pedantic. think of what a "queen" is in the euphemistic sense. This might clear things up.

I'm also having this problem, and don't consider "go back to Mint 7" to be a solution. If anyone who actually knows what they're talking about cares to offer some advice, it would be most appreciated. EDIT: Hey guess what? I solved the problem. Basically fiddled around with my Sound Preferences unti...

Re: Linux Mint 9 released!

OK, new install, and it's running awesome. Love the start-up disk creator, as I said before, and I also like the Move To/Copy To actions in Nautilus - pretty much the only thing I missed about KDE. Boot time is about the same as Mint 8, and it does run at about twice the memory (about 560MB as oppos...

Re: Nvidia crashing

That's what I've been seeing as a good solution, and will get on this probably later this week. Also, my first time using the Start-Up Disk Creator, and it ran beautifully. Booting from the USB was incredibly fast, and my machine was really quiet. Pretty much the opposite of a Live CD, in other word...

Nvidia crashing RESOLVED

Running Linux Mint 9, it seems I can no longer change Nvidia X server settings at all. Selecting, for example, fixed aspect ratio, the window will just crash, and no changes will be saved. Furthermore, trying to run a game fullscreen will result in my machine restarting itself. Does anyone know how ...
