Re: login keyring password?

you don't need to enter a password - just hit enter, and then 'use unsafe storage' when prompted. It won't ask in future.

Re: Amarok 2.4.1 not available ?

Assuming that you're running Mint 11, you'll need to add this PPA.

Re: Sick CPU temp.

it could be a design or manufacturing flaw Very much so, I have 15 or so dv-series laptops in the storeroom of my shop, all dead due to overheating. HP/Compaq are very reluctant to admit that there's a problem. If you do end up with a dead laptop, the only real options are a replacement mobo, or ge...

Re: Is it safe to update LMD?

I'm running fully updated copies of LMDE on 3 separate PCs all with completely different hardware configurations, and all installed within the last week. The only update problem I had was down to a daft error on my part - I was so used to using the main edition that I added Ubuntu PPAs to LMDE

Re: How can I install Gnome Shell?

You need to enable an experimental repo. They're a good way to break your system, but if you really want to risk it, add this to /etc/apt/sources.list: deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian experimental main Then enter the following command in terminal: sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude insta...

Odd, it would appear that your graphics card is supported.

Enter [code[glxinfo | grep render[/code] in the terminal, post the output here. Thanks.

Re: Sick CPU temp.

The HP dv-series laptops are renowned for their thermal problems.

There's not a lot you can do about it, other than update the BIOS to the latest version from the HP website. This will enable a 'fan always on' option in the BIOS settings.

Re: Install Firefox 4 on Mint 8???

Well, there will be no more updates for Mint 8, so it's definitely better in that regard.

Your laptop appears to be well within the system requirements for Mint 9 Gnome and KDE editions, but there are LXDE, Xfce and Fluxbox editions if you want to squeeze a bit more out of your hardware.

Re: Install Firefox 4 on Mint 8???

There is no Firefox 4 build for Mint 8. 8 is no longer supported as of April 29th ( http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1714 ) - you should probably consider upgrading to a newer version. EDIT: You don't need to go as far as LM11, you could upgrade your current install to Mint 9 LTS, which will be supporte...

Re: Help! I can't install XBMC.

Looking at http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/ppa/ubuntu/dists/ , it would appear that there are no packages available for Natty (the version of Ubuntu that Mint 11 is derived from). You may get away with using 'Software Sources' to edit the PPA to maverick rather than natty. It will probably work, ...

Re: Pull-down corners showing up in weird places

Actually, I've seen this a couple of times on the LM 11 main release. I noticed it after the switch from RC to release, but it may have been happening before that.

The only place I've seen it, however, is on the MintWelcome thingy.

Re: So....Android should be able to ad-hoc network now?

It's not a kernel patch that you need, it's a networking patch. And no, you can't do it with an .APK

Re: So....Android should be able to ad-hoc network now?

You would need to root your phone, which will void any warranty you may have, and then flash a custom ROM that includes an ad-hoc patch.

Try using unetbootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/) to make a bootable USB drive. You may be able to install from that.

Re: Virtual Box

Did you manage to install Mint, or are you running from the CD/DVD (or .iso)? If you are trying to access an installed system, then the username and password are the ones you set during installation. Otherwise, you have either a badly burned disk, or there is something wrong with the .iso you downlo...
