Re: LibreOffice Calc clone not working

Problem solved. I reverted to 18.3. I had been thinking of reverting anyway as we could not get our office Canon printer (C5030i) to work in 19. The Canon Linux drivers are rubbish. This Calc problem tipped the scales. :D :D

Re: LibreOffice Calc clone not working

If memory serves me well it was always fine on Mint 16, and definitely okay on 17 and 18. The LO package is the default that comes with 19 (and 19.1) Version 6.1.4 IS the latest version. https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download/ I will have to find out how to revert to an earlier version. Not t...

Re: LibreOffice Calc clone not working

Individual cells, groups of cells and even columns or rows clone correctly. Whole sheets do not clone at all. That is why I am at a loss and do not know what to do. It is a facility I regularly use several time a week so it is quite a problem for me. I have been around Linux for a lot of years now a...

64bit Mint 19.1 Cinnamon upgraded from a fresh install of 19 a week ago. LO 6.0.7.3 Added an extra sheet in a Calc spreadsheet then wanted to clone the format of an existing sheet into the new sheet. I have done this before many times. My method is to click the box in the top left corner and above t...

Re: Making Lightning work in Mint 19.1

Hi again karlchen, I am sorry its been a long time. My excuse is that I have had a major problem with our septic tank and underground sewerage pipework. Made worse as it was over a weekend. Still, now back to Lightning. I was concerned that uninstalling the old and now not compatible version of Ligh...

Hi Kark,

Many thanks for the explanation. It is a bit late in the evening for me so I'll look at this again tomorrow.

Cheers

Re: Making Lightning work in Mint 19.1

Hi karlchen ,

Yes I saw both of those but opted to stay with Lightning rather than going to xul-ext-lightning which seemed to me to be a different package.

You seem to indicate that I am wrong. I bow to your superior knowledge.

Making Lightning work in Mint 19.1

Making Lightning work in Mint 19.1 I have just completed a fresh install of 64 bit Mint 19.1 Cinnamon and was surprised to find that the calendar add-on ‘Lightning’ is not compatible with the default version of Thunderbird email client. Obviously I had miss-understood somewhere along the way as I th...

Re: [SOLVED] Deleting oldest named folder in a partition

I have just found this site.

https://www.shellscript.sh/

It seem that it is good a place as any to get started along a more structured path rather than the ad-hoc way I have been stumbling along.

Than you for the encouragement (and that explanation)

Re: Deleting oldest named folder in a partition

Lol!  The first thing I did was look at man type. No manual entry so I tried help but no entry there either. I went no further with man and turned to Mr G. Not much luck there either but, to be fair, I have had to do some other things as well so left off at that point. Thank you again for...

Re: Deleting oldest named folder in a partition

Well gm10, as you knew it would your line of script worked fine. Thank you. First I ran it on a test setup and just now on my live data and all was well – sigh of relief! Looking at you line of code I had not heard of ‘mindepth’ or ‘maxdepth’ before and have read up on them so now understand how the...

Re: Deleting oldest named folder in a partition

Hi gm10, I have set up a spare partition and copied folders and files over so I can run a trial without actually endangering my data. In the meantime I am trying to fully understand the line of code you have written. I will update you later on, possibly tomorrow and let you know how I am getting on....

Re: Deleting oldest named folder in a partition

If it of any help, here is my test script for inserting a new folder and copying data into it.

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash
now=$(date +"%Y-%m-%d_%H-%M")
mkdir --m 755 /home/username/Desktop/"$now"
cp -r "/home/username/trial" /home/username/Desktop/"$now"

[SOLVED] Deleting oldest named folder in a partition

64 bit Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon I have a partition in which I store 7 daily backup files . Each file is named using the date & time of creation. For example a file name of 2018-12-22_18:02 ("%Y-%m-%d_%H-%M). Obviously there is a finite amount of room in the partition so each day I delete the oldest,...

You can cp -a /timeshift/snapshots/2017-12-11_18-17-57/ /media/kyowash/backups
Will that copy the log files as well please?

Re: Understanding Timeshift quirks (1)

I am very grateful to one and all who have helped with my initial questions. I think, well I hope, that at long last thanks to all the help you have given and the links you have provided I have got a much clearer understanding of what timeshift does and how it does it as well as how the various opti...

Re: Understanding Timeshift quirks (2)

I confess that I am struggling with that a bit. Sorry if I am being dim. I suppose my problem is that I do not understand rsync. I was under the impression that it compares two files and notes the differences and records only those those differences which would mean it would need both the original ...

Basically the work is being done by the EXT4 filesystem using rsync and hardlinks... Timeshift is just a frontend for the process. This is basically what Timeshift does - the hard link diagram may help you understand what's happening in the background
One very helpful link. Thank you.

Re: Understanding Timeshift quirks (1)

My version of timeshift doesn't say that but I take it that it references the single cron job that it sets up, which runs every hour on the hour. The cron job runs timeshift which then checks its internal schedule to see if it needs to do anything. That info was likely removed from the UI in my ver...
