Re: [Solved] Copy one disk to another

Unfortunately, dd ran its full course. It stopped with the massage saying that there was insufficient space; I saw that and instantly realised my error. Between posts I had noticed that the PATA DVD drive cable was in the primary socket in the motherboard while the HDD cable was in the secondary, so...

Re: Copy one disk to another

Ahh well. All that work and I rather spoilt the happy ending. Despite checking and double checking I got the two disks mucked up. I never was much good at proof reading. Thank you so much for your help rene. At least I have learnt something of the power of dd. I'm just off to hide in a corner somewh...

Re: Copy one disk to another

I'm sorry about the delay in responding. Just to clarify, my test machine does not normally have HDDs installed. On this occasion only the two drive we are discussing were connected. It was booted using a 32 bit Mint 18.2 DVD. In the results below /dev/sdb is the donor drive (I have deleted the part...

Re: Copy one disk to another

Thank you rene. Forgive me for attempting to clarify and understand your comments. I have never used dd before and want to fully understand the commands so I can be sure of it doing exactly what I want it to do. 1. /dev/zero is not a partition, it is a "fake" device that simply returns all-zero byte...

[Solved] Copy one disk to another

I have the task of making a copy of one old HDD to another. The original is not S.M.A.R.T. enabled and is 80GB in size. As it is formatted as an MBR disk it has a block size of 512 MB and is a bootable disk. The recipient disk is the larger of the two and was totally blank but I have made a 80 GB pa...

Re: New facility in Advance Search requested

I was tempted to try a chocolate teapot once. Then I thought about it but could not decide which would be the worse of the possible outcomes. The tea tasting of chocolate, the chocolate tasting of tea, or the teapot melting. I decided to abandon the idea of the experiment. :D :D Do you know who I co...

Re: New facility in Advance Search requested

Hi Moem. A classic case of why I was asking for an extension to the Advanced search facility is the heading of my other current thread the heading of which is “Why dual boot”. As the forum search engine stands at present anyone looking for that specific question will have the first word disregarded....

Re: Why dual boot?

It was only yesterday that I bought a new Plextor SATA burner that came with a "Plextor Utilities" CD-ROM that sported a quite brilliant tool, allowing all sorts of testing and analysis both of drive and disks. I trust it won't surprise you to hear the tool was not a Linux tool -- nor that anything...

after more than 10 years of using Linux 99% there are times that I must use Windows. I only have Windows on a couple machines, but I have the luxury of that access when I Need it.
If you have to then I would not call it a luxury, more of an evil necessity. :D

Each to their own I suppose.

Re: Why dual boot?

As you will see from my comment earlier on in this thread, I have been around Linux for a very long time. For what I do every day, for what I use my computers for, I am very well aware of what is and what is not available in Linuxworld. I have not had Windows on any computer for many, many years. It...

Re: Why dual boot?

Thank you kc1di. This post was actually about the decided lack of available information about single booting a UEFI system which the link in your post covers so thank you for that. I was not actually asking for help, it was just a moan but I am very grateful for all the comments, yours in particular...

Re: Why dual boot?

Yes, I agree with you that there is a lack of documentation/Tutorials for installing LM, esp in UEFI mode, as a single-boot system, My point exactly. I have read seemingly loads of 'tutorials/help files' on dual booting, for the most part on MBR systems but several on UEFI machines. The former is j...

Moem, I apologise for the confusion. I shall try to be more precise in future. I wrote with my sloppy mispronunciation of my own language. Hang my head in shame!

Re: New facility in Advance Search requested

At the top right of the board is the “Search” bar. To the right of that are two icons. The first is a magnifying glass, the text of which when you hover over it is “Search”. The second is a star. The text for that one is “Advanced search”. Clicking on that icon opens a page with many additional feat...

Re: Why dual boot?

It was just an example. Apparently one that is open to interpretation.

Thank you for looking, and please excuse my rant. I get so very frustrated sometimes; mostly at myself for not understanding or knowing.

Re: New facility in Advance Search requested

I have tried "rebooting problem" site:forums.linuxmint.com . That returned two sites: Asus EEE PC 1001HA: display problems - Linux Mint Forums and Linux Mint 8 Xfce RC1 Bug Thread - Linux Mint Forums . Without the quotation marks I got at least 10 pages of results, the first of which retuned all Min...
