Re: What are your 'must have applications/software'?

Welcome to the forum! Since everyone has different needs and tastes, and since there are a gazillion apps in repos, it is very hard to pinpoint a concise list. Nonetheless, there is a good site that fits the bill, by categorically listing and reviewing trendy Linux desktop apps. I'd suggest you to t...

Re: Mint freezing completely

If it would suddenly freeze and reboot, I'd also suggest you to look into the CPU temperature. There are diagnostic tools in repos (hardinfo, etc.) to check the sensors. But since this is a slow process, I don't think it has anything to do with overheating and such.

Re: Problème de clavier mystérieux depuis mise à jour

Salut. Peut-être, il y a un problème avec votre clavier, particulièrement avec la touche "Alt Gr". Pourriez-vous voir si c'est le cas, en démarrant votre ordinateur avec un live dvd/usb et essayer le clavier de lá?

Re: Python Help

Yes it does, because you are running on a volatile (not permanent) system. Anyways, this is not a big issue, I am also coding Python in Linux, so no worries. You should go ahead with the installation after backing up. You will learn how to use the ropes with Python real fast, when you start experime...

Re: How to install module BeautifulSoap?

Afaik, there should be setting in PyCharm from where one can instruct to program which python package will be used. I am not a PyCharm user but it might have installed its own sand-boxed Python version and might be using it instead. Besides, it might be directed to use "python" (ver.2) instead, whic...

Re: Mint freezing completely

Hard to say, but from your description, it seems a RAM issue. Seems as if your RAM or swap file is gobbled up under heavy usage. Yet by looking at your logs, it seems you have 8 GB RAM, which should be more than enough. Another possibility is a hardware issue, that is one of your RAM chips might be ...

Re: How to turn off power management

This will be besides the point, but "gksudo" is no more. You can use

Code: Select all

pkexec xed filename
or

Code: Select all

xed admin://filename
to get to the graphical root password login.

Re: I forget, but can relearn!

Welcome Yuritau, I think we are on the same bus, as I am also back from a long Windows trip. Regarding your question for "swap", Mint 19 didn't allocate a separate partition during setup for me, but used a swap file à la Windows, which is a wise choice imho. This swap file thing is the new trend in ...

Re: echo "hello world" >> freedom.txt

Thanks everyone. I am very glad to have such a warm welcome. :D Back in my distro-hopping days, I had also looked into Mint ("Bianca" I guess). It was promising especially with the looks, but somehow I could accidentally manage to break it down. Now after all those years, Linux Mint with Cinnamon ha...

Re: Python Help

OK. To begin with, there are two versions of Python installed on your Mint system: python (version 2) and python3 (version 3). The code: print("Hi") belongs to python3, since the developers have changed some syntax going from 2 to 3, most notably "print" among others. For python (aka ver.2) this cod...

Re: Update manager / minutupdate stopped working (solved)

Also the following command is good to keep in mind, in case something goes south during any installation process:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install -f
Here, -f stands for "fix-broken". It tries to fix broken packages and dependencies.
