Re: What made you switch to Linux Mint?

A chance encounter with a Cassandra CD got me using Mint. Back in 2007 I was a MCSE and in the workplace I was obliged to use XP. Up until then I was experimenting with Caldera at home and then started with those early versions of Ubuntu (prior to Unity). That Cassandra CD changed everything. I stil...

Sound Settings on Mint XFCE behaves-n-looks different to the one in Xubuntu The volume slider is similiar but when one selects Settings, the Mixer dialog pops up and various slider controls are presented In Xubuntu, one had the option--amongst many others--of moving the slider beyou...

Re: Mint Unity?

I'm on 5.10!
I started promoting the use of Unity about a month after the Mint 12 rollout.
I haven't looked back and the more I use it the more I find it... just so sensible!

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

When Lisa came out... and Cinnamon, I musta done two or three fresh installs. Nice learning curves... but I could've done without the frustrations of the new methods of std gnome3, fallback, mate and then that spicy thingy trashing my Mint! With my last install I removed all that stuff and stuck it ...

Re: Mint Unity?

if Unity has something over Gnome Shell, it's certainly not customization or configuration options. I concur. My experience so far is that G3 certainly has more going for it... but that was not my assertion. Rather it was that there are customizations and tweaks that can be applied in the Unity spa...

Re: Mint Unity?

I recently started using it... and I like it! After months of using G3 in default and classic modes--and on occasion defaulting to Cinnamon--I still find it hard to buy into default G3 methods. Classic G and Cinnamon at the end of the day, are about getting into a G2 way of working albeit with G3. I...

Re: What's the feeling around here about Gnome-shell?

Ok... so the question up front on the poll included 'Unity' but there wasn't much dis-cussion about it per se. I've just got back from a really long, long-weekend where I had the opportunity to play with both Ubuntu and Xubuntu 11.10. Being an ex-XFCE user it was easy to be impressed... After months...

Re: Shortcuts (ALT+TAB, ALT+F2) not working

While I don't have a problem with ALT+Tab, today when I logged on ALT+F2 did not run. I haven't run update manager for a few days although even if I had I can't understand why that keybinding would be reset. I use ALT+F2 everyday--except weekends--so I know it was available yesterday. Really weird! ...

Re: Classic v Classic (No Effects)

OK the solution seems simply to auto-start compiz on the Classic option--geezz... G3 and compiz... who knew? Also... I discovered purely by chance that Alt+right-click on the panels exposes properties and moving or adding of items. However once compiz initialised, some keyboard combinations that wer...

Re: LiveCD Won't go much futher than casper?

On my Lenovo W500 laptop I initially only got as far as casper loading a blank, black screen. If I recall there was on occasion just a small blinking line cursor on the top left hand corner of the screen. Eventually it dawned on me that the release notes actually hinted a clue... that maybe I needed...

Re: Where is Lisa proxy authentication?

OK... it took awhile to discover that gconf-editor wasn't gonna work. In G2 it did but in G3 to edit the configuration database one needs to install 'dconf-editor'. However... even though /system/proxy has all the right fields for manual proxy intervention, they didn't work... at least for me. So. W...

Re: Mint 12 driving me mad!

Update... Uninstalled MATE and pretty much work with Cinnamon. While default Gnome 3 is interesting, if Cinnamon weren't an option, I'd be changing my session at login to Gnome Classic (however I don't like two panels and there doesn't appear to be a simple method to rationalise to one...) but Cinn...

Classic v Classic (No Effects)

On session login if I select either of those options I don't seem to see what the difference is. Window and panel appearance wise, they look the pretty much the same. If I select Gnome then there are some window decoration settings applied. I can appreaciate what 'No Effects' should do but with the ...

Where is Lisa proxy authentication?

In previous versions of network-properties one could set the authentication as well as 'applying it system wide'. While 'mate-network-properties' has that feature it doesn't have the 'apply system wide' option; under MATE it doesn't seem to work anyway as I have to now configure firefox and package ...

Re: Mint 12 driving me mad (not!)

Seriously! I am so impressed with Lisa! Why did I even bother with flicking options on or off? The logon session has exactly what I need to get back to my preferred way of working with windows! Definitely have un-plused myself from my original perspectives of this version... now, I just have to fig...

Re: Mint 12 driving me mad!

OK... I'm gonna have to -1 myself! It's the last day of 2011 and I decided to upgrade my BIOS and then re-look at my Lisa live-cd. I didn't experience previous problems with panels disappearing etc. So. Backed up my home folder and did a fresh install of Mint12. I did a number of logouts and update...

Re: Mint 12 driving me mad!

My biggest problem is that after some time my window manager seems to go crazy. I am unable to minimize windows or open the menu. When I press "alt-tab" it brings up the application selector but it does nothing, and stays on the screen. The only way that I can recover my system is to do a "alt-back...
