Re: Any way to 'autohide' top and bottom panels?

You didn't clarify what distro you're playing with... but certainly you can install docks! There are options. Google 'linux docks' and you'll find great reviews. 'awn' and 'docky' are great starting off points. It's all about what look-n-feel-n-functionality you're after. Right-click on your panel t...

Re: Why isn't Mint an official Ubuntu derivative?

I moved from OpenSuse to LM when a freebie LM 3.0 CD arrived on my desk.
Back those days... if one looked at the derivatives mentioned on Ubuntu's site... you would've seen amongst others, Linux Mint listed!

Re: [Solved] Katya DVD doesn't work all the way

SO... finally got past the 'nomodeset' issue! Following up on SimonTS's comment that there should be correct drivers and that one doesn't want to resort to using 'nomodeset' as a permanent solution. I found that there was a BIOS update for the W500 from IBM. Burned a CD, booted it up and applied the...

Re: [Solved] Katya DVD doesn't work all the way

Okay... the solution for me was to: 1. follow SimonTS advice to get the LiveDVD running 2. after the install, edit /etc/default/grub and change these lines to look like this: #GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset" I'd still like to know what that "quiet splash" is/...

Re: Katya DVD doesn't work all the way

You could try to edit the boot command. At the GRUB screen, press <TAB> and edit the command line - remove the words 'quiet' and 'splash' and replace them with 'nomodeset'. That worked great... thanks! So. Live session loaded just fine... got Katya installed. However on restart... a black screen is...

[Solved] Katya DVD doesn't work all the way

Burned a linuxmint-11-gnome-dvd-64bit.iso. Its' md5sum checked fine and the DVD loads okay on the Samsung laptop. However on the Lenovo W500, casper starts and then an unexpected exit occurs on a modprobe task. a lspci on the ThinkPad produces: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series ...

Re: What's the feeling around here about Gnome-shell?

I thought I'd gauge the feeling around here about Gnome-Shell. I left Ubuntu-Testing due to Unity being "forced" down the users throats---I've been involved with Gnome-Shell from the very start & would have rather had it as default in Ubuntu than Unity......So, what do people here think about it? U...

Re: Iceweasel is terribly slooooow... Any new ideas?

I know this is not a solution to your problem... but I dropped using Firefox for the very same reasons that you described... 'cos I wasn't getting much joy from the proposed solutions to said issues. I currently use the default Gnome's Web Browser (listed as Epiphany Browser) and I haven't looked ba...

Re: What's the feeling around here about Gnome-shell?

All I can say is... rats! I like it! I guess I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I've never used Ubuntu... seen it sure. I converted from OpenSuse when a Mint 3 CD was given me. When LMDE was released I moved over 'cos (a) as a Microsoft devotee I cut my teeth on Linux with Debian and (b) I...

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

Rats... I like it! I tried the method posted on the Gnome3 site. Used the 64 version. I guess with having a Mac at home I'm not as attached or fixed into any one or other method of managing windows. I only have one criteria... if I have to use Microsoft, it runs in VirtualBox and lives by itself on ...

Re: Virtualbox 4

The question is, has anyone got virtualbox 4 running on LMDE and what do you need to do to get it to work? For sure! But then I use the deb from the Oracle site rather... you don't want to be using the OSE versions if USB connections are necessary. $ dpkg -l virtual* ||/ Name Version Description ++...

If you came from Ubuntu... and liked the Unity stuff then I guess Mutter makes some sense.
If you wanna get used to Gnome 3... I guess Mutter also makes some sense.
Other than that... not really!

Re: Custom sys launchers

Thanks olicanollie, Pilosopong Tasyo! While I am well-versed with your suggestions... that was not what I wanted to do. Then I may as well chuck mintmenu away and go old-school with main menu or menu bar. But no... I like mintmenu and its gonna stay. The point here was simply to make known "...a fea...

Re: Brasero Not Working

Update!! Only brasero-cdrkit is required. Nice if this was added to the updates sent out to everyone. SWEET! Thanks! I was about to pull my hair out. The brasero on the wife's main edition Juila-32x makes isos simple enough! But on my LMDE-64x... well... cut a long story short and say that brasero-...

Re: Virtualbox

Feel like I haven't really helped you... that 3.28 number that you refer to bothers me.
Sounds like something from the mint repos and not from the oracle site. Go to http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads and download v4. That ose version will not allow a usb to manifest in win explorer!

Custom sys launchers

I guess this is a feature request: on the System Tab--similar to what is on the Places tab--it would be helpful if one could add custom items (or launchers) as well. I could think of one or two sys related tasks that I would like to see here. Sure they exist in the menu but I use them them frequentl...

USB is not available in the OSE version... you need to use the PUEL version if you need USB support.
Better yet download version 4 of vbox.

Re: How to Remove (Hide) Users list at login Screen in Helen

However python-gdm2setup is not there for LMDE! I had this same requirement and it is a mission figuring out for Debian... you need to edit usr/share/linuxmint/adjustments/gdm3/greeter.gconf-defaults and not /etc/gdm3/greeter.gconf-defaults as one might have been inclined to do. In a clean Debian in...
