Re: Is it possible to set the firewall to reject all traffic for a particular user but not all users?

I'd like to create a login on my machine that has access to programs for word processing, games, offline music, etc. but that is rejected from all internet, outbound and inbound. Is there a way to configure the firewall to do exactly that? To block outbound internet access for user_you_want_to_bloc...

Re: Start a script on login instead of startup

I did a quick search and I think I found some useful answers. https://askubuntu.com/questions/226278/run-script-on-wakeup https://askubuntu.com/questions/92218/how-to-execute-a-command-after-resume-from-suspend https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/152039/how-to-run-a-user-script-after-systemd-wa...

Re: Desktop Environments

I don't think that Welcome's method will actually work in the way he believes it will; it will remove only the meta-package, not all of the additional packages that the meta-package pulls in. Thanks ajgreeny. I get these lists for mate and xfce: mate apt-get -s install mint-meta-mate ... The follow...

Re: Desktop Environments

Were mate and xfce installed by mint-meta-mate and mint-meta-xfce? If so, you could use Synaptic Package Manager to remove them. Just search for "mint-meta" and you'll see mint-meta-mate and mint-meta-xfce. If the boxes next to these items are empty, then this won't work, but if the boxes ...

Thunderbird 78.4.2 Updates From Debian

There is another option. It is to use Debian for Thunderbird. Using the method provided by Clem and friends for Chromium, and a few select edits, I was successful in updating Thunderbird from Debian. I don't know how often it'll be updated, so that might be a concern. Also, PLEASE research, read and...

Re: Thunderbird 78.2 - ETA ?

Thanks Karl. All - I've been reviewing the changes in the various Thunderbird releases, and I see some security fixes along with many other changes. For those Linux Mint users who want to upgrade, what do you recommend? Which method should I use when I need to tell my grandmother over the phone how ...

Re: Is it possible to "ignore" a WiFi printer?

After looking at the ref, the steps should be: 1. In a terminal, open a file for editing: sudo nano /etc/cups/cups-browsed.conf 2. Using the down arrow key, scroll down until you find the BrowseFilter area. Enter this: BrowseFilter NOT name ^HP_OfficeJet_Pro.* BrowseFilter NOT host ^HP_OfficeJet_Pro...

Re: Write Activity When Safely Removing an External SSD

Under an EXT2 filesystem (and I believe it is similar for EXT3), there's the ext2_super_block structure that contains amongst many variables the variable s_mnt_count , and this is number of times the file system has been mounted. When the mount count reaches the max_mnt_count, a fsck session is for...

Re: Write Activity When Safely Removing an External SSD

Can anyone verify or debunk my theory? I wonder if there's a way to verify or debunk your theory. Are there any commands that might trace the details of the activity during the unmount? Would this command provide any insight into what is happening? strace umount /media/username/mountedSSDname I tri...

Re: Bash script to advise when Internet restored

If I read your description correctly, your case statement already does most all of the work. Just a few simple additions should complete the steps that you've mentioned. You'd copy and paste the below into a text file, save it, and then change the permissions to make it executable. You'd then execut...
