Agreed. Use Virtualbox, your hardware will work just fine. MS Virtual PC does not support hardware as well as VB does.

Re: Buy Merlwiz A New Computer

All of that equipment should run fine with the 620w PS from Antec even with a single rail. You definitely will not need a monster PS to run only those components. If you are talking about adding 3 or 4 hard drives, more disc burners, multiple video cards, then yes you'd need a much more powerful PS....

Re: Frustrated - CD-R burning is failing..

I'm having the same sort of issue with a Toshiba laptop. I'm trying to copy an audio CD, and it reads it fine, but fails upon writing (with Brasero) but works fine with an external CD drive, so I suspect the internal CD drive. Its like it doesn't support a certain format that Brasero is trying to us...

Re: Buy Merlwiz A New Computer

Just my opinion, but it seems like you have lots of good stuff, so why skimp out with the case?!

Here is a nice case/PS combo that should work good: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDeal ... mbo.345220

or something similar... again.. JMO :)

Re: No BIOS USB functionality after Mint 8 "Helena" install.

I may just be stating the obvious, but my bios has an option to enable/disable USB keyboard and mouse support as well as legacy devices, so if all those are enabled, maybe look for a Bios update from the mfr?? Not sure what else you might be able to do.

I'm not sure an animal exists, though most of Ubuntu's and Debian's related topics still fit because Mint is based on both Ubuntu and Debian. There is a basic "user" guide, but I gather you are looking for something a little more substantial. BTW, Welcome to the Mint Fourms!!! http://ftp.heanet.ie/p...

Re: Folding@Home

I have Mint8 -64 installed and Fah6 -64bit up and running, so we will see what it can do. :) Make sure you configure the client with the -smp flag so that it takes advantage of your dual cores (if you have duals) My AMD Phenom II is averaging about 1600-1800 PPD - not too shabby for what it is... I...

If everything seems to be working, sound, etc. Then I'd say your good. There is not much you need to do to Linux these days to install drivers, etc. Most of the time it will detect and activate any hardware you have.

Re: BIOSTAR P4M900-M4 Mainboard new install of Helena

It sounds like you need to purchase an add-in card, that has an Nvidia or ATI Chipset in order to get better video performance, as Linux is just "tolerating it" The top video chipsets that Linux supports well are ATI, Intel, and Nvidia. When I upgraded my motherboard, I thought the onboard ATI video...

Re: Partitioning New Installation

Here's how I would set up your system... First I would make a new backup of all of your personal files, pictures, music, etc.. also any specialized config files, etc. Make your 160gb drive your primary, and your 250gb your secondary drive. Start the install. Create a swap partition first, of about 2...

Re: how do i get virtual box to run?

If you want to use USB devices with VB, you will need to uninstall the version you installed via the package manager and download the one from www.virtualbox.org. I just installed it last night on my Mint 8 system, and it put an Icon under 'System Tools'

For now the only way to use Itunes on Linux is to run Windows in a VM (Virtual Machine) ie Virtualbox, Vmware, etc. www.virtualbox.org I have not tried installing Itunes with Wine (lets you run Windows apps on Linux) but that might be another option. I seriously doubt that Apple will port ITunes ove...

Re: newbe as you can get-be the first...

Usually if you want to dual boot, having Windows installed first makes things a bit easier. If you boot from the install disk, (I'm assuming Mint 8) it will default to dual booting windows and Linux. Just take your time and read your way through it. Just make sure that you have any important data ba...

Re: ext4 version

There is info on page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ext4 that unstable version of ext4 was released 10 October 2006 and stable - 21 October 2008. So if I have distro with unstabe version of ext4 installed on my PC (and the HDD is formatted to that unstable ext4) and I install newer distro with stabl...
