[Solved] Mint 19 on T400 - experiences?

Has anyone installed Mint 19 on T400?
If, what are the experiences? Is Mint 19 too heavy on T400 (4GB RAM)?

I'm thinking of upgrading from 17.3 (Cinnamon) due to newer HW, and since the support is going to end soonish anyway.
I've been happy with 17.3/Cinnamon.

Re: Help for Lenovo ThinkPad T400 + Linux Mint

I've been running Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon for years on T400 (4GB RAM) without problems. I'm actually writing this on the very machine. It still feels faster than Windows 10 on newer laptops (like my work machine - some Dell) and much more stable. (I often refer to Mint as "Ubuntu stable", even if M...

Re: Adding a network printer

Status update: It may be that adding this printer by name is not possible. I found another URI-form, but it didn't work with this printer. hp:/net/Color_LaserJet_MFP_M277dw?zc=NPIB88B68 Also tried hp:/net/Color_LaserJet_MFP_M277dw?serial=NPIB88B68 but it didn't work either. Also hplip-3.17.11 doesn'...

Re: Adding a network printer

I guess Mint people should get a bit worried, if Debian has newer hplip than Mint. :-D

Re: plug-in HP Color Laserjet Pro M277dw

good work; working away on your own computer pays dividends; I was curious where you got hp-setup -i from; (I see now it means interactive); if one does man hp-setup in the terminal; and full-page it to read, there are a host of options to explore; let us know when you think the printer is behaving...

Re: Adding a network printer

Status update: Hplip works partly. It detects the printer, and the 'print settings' and 'printer control' seems to work. What doesn't work is 'status' and 'supplies'. On both pages it says "information not available for this device". The 3.16.x on my Debian machine everything works, but it's from th...

Re: Adding a network printer

What the ... The hplip just started working by itself? I did nothing, but it suddenly started to find the printer... (well, I did some port scanning, but that shouldn't have any effects.) Now what's left is figuring out if the name can be used instead of IP. Hmm, if there are no printers, the HP dev...

Re: Adding a network printer

Installed that too. Also, should there be open UDP ports? Especially, if the firewall is insctive? $ nmap -T4 -A localhost Starting Nmap 6.40 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2018-08-26 13:56 EEST Nmap scan report for localhost (127.0.0.1) Host is up (0.00064s latency). Re: Adding a network printer

BTW, The HP device manager says: HPLIP cannot detect printers in your network. This may be due to existing firewall settings blocking the required ports. When you are in a trusted network environment, you may open the ports for network services like mdns and slp in the firewall. For detailed steps f...

Re: Adding a network printer

Installed it, but it didn't help.
I thought it was installed, but hp-check revealed it wasn't, so I installed it.

Re: Adding a network printer

I didn't install any plugins, and I haven't been asked to. The hp-setup starts fine, but doesn't find anything. I don't even know where to find the plugin. Oh, and looks like 3.15.2 is the latest hplip in Mint repos - even in Mint 19. Now that I knew what to look for, I found out about hp-plugin - t...

Re: Adding a network printer

It would also be nice to find a hplip-package that supports the printer. Hplip 3.15.2 doesn't.
I installed hplip 3.17.11 from HP website (downloaded quite a while ago), but I'd prefer a proper package.

Re: Adding a network printer

You can kludge a workaround for this easily by giving the printer a fixed IP address in the router and adding whatever name you want to refer to it as in the hosts file. You'll find it at /etc/hosts. Every router I've had enables you to exclude a range of IP addresses so it won't dynamically alloca...

Re: Adding a network printer

What would be the host name then? If the printer is connected to your router then there isn't a host name. Host refers to a hosting computer, which means the host name is the computer name. You can kludge a workaround for this easily by giving the printer a fixed IP address in the router and adding...

Re: Adding a network printer

Also, there were two entries for the printer. The other one (192.168.0.100) seems to be "off-line", but it also has different MAC than the "working" entry. Any idea what that is? 192.168.0.104 30:e1:71:b8:8b:68 NPIB88B68 2018/08/25 10:25:10 - 2018/08/25 22:25:10 192.168.0.100 a0:28:ed:85:2f:73 NPIB8...

Re: Adding a network printer

192.168.0.104 30:e1:71:b8:8b:68 NPIB88B68 2018/08/25 10:25:10 - 2018/08/25 22:25:10 I take it that the "NPIB88B68" is the host name. At a guess, it's the printer name. What would be the host name then? The printer is directly connected to the ADSL/router. And the line is from DHCP-table of the ADSL...

Re: Adding a network printer

By giving it's IP (now 192.168.0.104) I can get to the printer's webserver. I could add a static IP for the printer in the ADSL-box (DHCP-server), but I wonder if there's a way to use the printer's name instead of IP. I understand that it should be possible using an URI like ipp://ip-address-or-host...
