Re: Strange CD/DVD drive activity?

Yes, and it's a worker thread, but which process does it work for, or how to find out? My problem is not a kworker hogging too much resources. I just wonder why it's accessing my CD drive every now and then. (You hear a "seek-like" sound, the led is blinking etc. An once it ejected by itself.) My ot...

Re: Strange CD/DVD drive activity?

Now with some sounds with strange cdrom activity... Only kworker/u8:2 and kworker/u8:1 found with the same activities. I can't understand the difference: something was different because now there was the "seek sound", previously there wasn't. Here's the end of the new blkparsed blktrace of /dev/cdro...

GtkTerm acts weird.

Any idea why GtkTerm does this? Next write puts it back into sensible way again. (I don't seem to be able to attach a 33 kB picture, and dropbox seems to use https only.) https://www.dropbox.com/s/ur0jy4a2hex133d/Screenshot%20from%202017-03-07%2002%3A20%3A40.png?dl=0 This is not really a problem, bu...

Re: Strange CD/DVD drive activity?

I tried blktrace/blkparse ('blktrace -d /dev/cdrom -o cdrom.trc') and got: 11,0 0 1 0.000000000 14998 G N [kworker/u8:2] 11,0 0 2 0.000011384 14998 I R 8 (4a 01 00 00 10 00 00 00 08 0 0 ..) Re: Strange CD/DVD drive activity?

At least the "CD-ROM (Installation Disk)" in "Additional repositories" is not selected. The applications that I've been using lately are Firefox, Chrome, Gnome terminal, gedit, Document Viewer Nemo and Gtkterm. (Chrome, because Firefox can't handle the TV-guide I'm using. And pretty much ONLY for th...

Strange CD/DVD drive activity?

There has been some weird activity on my machine lately, and I wonder what that could be and how to find out. After being ON for a couple of days (put to suspend when not used), there 'sounds to be' some CD/DVD drive activity all of a sudden, and that happens every now and then, maybe a couple of ho...

Re: Windows start jumping back and forth on laptop

I've been using a USB mouse only since I disabled the key pad - no problems this far. I guess I'll try with both enabled and see if left click stops the scrolling. Thanks for the hint. But as the video shows, the window scrolls in both directions more or less randomly, and it keeps doing that even i...

Re: Windows start jumping back and forth on laptop

Looks like disabling the touchpad altogether helped. At least the problem hasn't appeared since.

It would be nice, though, to sometimes be able to use the touchpad too.
Suggestions for further investigations?

Re: Windows start jumping back and forth on laptop

Gets even more weird: It hit again. This time I pressed the touchpad and moved my finger around a bit. Then the scrolling stopprd, but the mouse cursor started moving up and down as fast as it used to scroll. Played a bit with the touchpad and mouse, and this time IT STOPPED, and ewerything started ...

Re: Windows start jumping back and forth on laptop

The problem hit again.
It's weird that the wild scrolling stops if I put my finger on the touchpad. As if the touchpad started sending random events when idle.

Re: Windows start jumping back and forth on laptop

The problem hit. Had to reboot. Writing with a finger on the touchpad was hard, and it looked like also the focus shifted around without a finger on the pad. The only program that I used during the new account test was Firefox (49.0.2 for Linux Mint). (I think) I didn't reboot when I switched to the...

Hard to say about the live system. Couldn't use that too long.

I'll try another new user account. Thanks.

Re: Windows start jumping back and forth on laptop

On the installed system now, and it happened again. Any suggestions where to look or what to do? I tried to look at Cinnamon code, but it was pretty hopeless to figure out how to use Melange to look into Cinnamon. Also I guess the problem could be in GTK as well. Checked that there is no "ghost" but...

Re: Windows start jumping back and forth on laptop

It looks like I have to give up live-DVD testing. I need stuff that I installed.
I wonder if the Cinnamon debugger (Melange) could help instead?

MIPS simulators for small programs?

I'm not sure if this belongs here, but... Any idea about MIPS simulators/emulators that work fine on Mint? I try to help assembly learners on Dream.In.Code and every now and then it would be handy to be able to run some code. Dream.In.Code is NOT one of those "we-do-your-homework-for-you-for-lots-of...

Re: Windows start jumping back and forth on laptop

The HW is Lenovo ThinkPad T400. And I also suspect the touchpad, because the scrolling stops if I press the touchpad with a finger - for as long as I keep my finger on the pad. It's just that the the only way to stop the scrolling is to reboot (or maybe restart X, but equally lengthy process). It's ...

Re: Windows start jumping back and forth on laptop

From your last sentence I understand, that the problem is not jumping of Windows (the complete video inclusive the background is jumping and hard to watch), but that autoscroll behavior. Boot your live system. Does the problem appear there in the same way? Yes, the problem is the random fast back a...

Re: Windows start jumping back and forth on laptop

Does anyone have suggestions about logs to check or things to try to figure out what happened? Dmesg didn't show anything suspicious, and I didn't find anything weird in the Xorg.0.log either. Oh, and only window the contents of which doesn't fit fully, starts jumping (or actually scrolling) randoml...
