Re: Unicode Indian language

Not sure about that particular release, but if you have Preferences-->Keyboard as an option you can select Layouts, Add, choose Tabs of By Country, By Language. Pretty easy if that Preferences option is there. If not there in Helena, see if you can find a more recent Mint.

Re: why Debian version? why main version?

Just a "me too" to add to the previous replies. And a bit more. The potential for unexpected glitches with updates has been considerably reduced by creating a Mint tested repository to substitute for the Debian repos in which uppdates get released monthly rather than daily. Re: Filesystem anomaly

Every filesystem uses some disk space to provide information about which blocks are used and in what order, so the whole file can be accurately read. ext4 is constructed in such a way that it is possible to know, before actually writing more files to disk, how much space will be available for writin...

Re: Compiz fusion on a laptop

In the Settings Manager, under effects, enable Window Decoration. And poke around there and under Window Management. The effects take place immediately, so you can see if things look and behave as you want.

You need to scroll to the bottom and "accept" the terms. Been a while, but PgDn or arrow keys or Space or such, and I think Tab to choose and then hit the Enter key..

Re: How to install newer ia32-lib than mint repo? (for WINE)

Not in LMDE now, but when playing there I found that adding adding ia32-lib-gtk or something similar made some things work that did not before. Sorry for the vague recall, maybe just a hint.

Re: OK, This I all New to Me

Thunderbird, the mail client that comes with Mint, is now astonishingly easy to set up. You need to know your mail server, login name and password. Nothing more. If you now, in Windows, use a recent Firefox as a browser, the sync option will migrate your bookmarks and so on to your Mint Firefox. If ...

Re: Installing Linux for the first time

Don't take this as reliable advice. I stumbled around before arriving with this in fstab: # /DATA was on /dev/sda4 during installation UUID=28b52203-eaf2-46e8-9b19-0616e818f471 /media/DATA ext4 defaults 0 2 First, please read though Fred's how-to and the subsequent posts that help clarify --> http:/...

If you want no thumbnails at all, within Nautilus, go to Edit-> Preferences->Preview and set the choices there to 'Never.'

Re: HELP! Live DVD won't boot...'prefix' is not set

No Macbook experience here, but tried searching via Scroogle. (It eliminates user-id-info from Google and thus does not hide "wrong language" or other things that Google's "you" profile predicts to be of low click-probability.) So some stuff in Chinese and German showed up. Google Translate actually...

Re: metalink ??

If you are doing a mint4win, install Mint inside of windows instead of to the hard drive on its own partition, this appears to be a wubi error. Never tried that, but see if this link helps: https://bugs.launchpad.net/wubi/+bug/577003 Alternatives are virtualbox within Windows or a separate install t...

Re: problems finding things installed

Some apps are designed for other Desktops, and don't "look for" a gnome-based menu. In these cases, sometimes right-clicking the MintMenu and selecting Reload Plugins will get them added. In the future, if you encounter this issue, try that. Of course, that won't work with apps that are only executa...

Re: cant open .zips anymore

If you mean that the above command returned an error, it may be that the "run as root" advice was too vague, or maybe there was some typo. Hit the select all button to copy the apt-get install p7zip-full --reinstall. Open a Terminal and paste it in there. It will ask for your password. Type it (noth...

Sorry for the delay. Yes, that is the package. If you right-click and select properties, you can get a lot more info about the packages you are curious about. Things will make more sense as you get a better feel for how Linux works. One thing is that windows can be drawn and handled by different eng...

Re: Compiz Settings.

Some have had enough trouble to go back to a previous version. It works fine for me in LM11-64bit Gnome, but it took a little playing around to get all that stuff going. There is a compiz extras package to be installed via the package manager. Not the exact name, but typing that in the search field ...

Re: Photo Upload Icons in XFCE GF wants them bigger

In Nautilus, the LM Gnome default, there is % button that in 'icon view' mode changes the preview size. Added Thunar, out of curiosity, and it seems the same is accomplished via 'menubar/view/zoom in' If that is not satisfactory, gThumb has good sized previews and an upload to Flikr (and others) opt...
