Re: Hang @ install??

first timer:
When you restart your computer you can access the BIOS settings by tapping a key as it begins the boot process. On mine it is the delete key, but the first screen you see should tell you which key to hit.

After that, you'll have to explore a bit.

Re: No Volume Control, Function Keys, or Sleep, Random Shut-

Overheating certainly seems a probable cause. Clean out the vents, keep it off of soft surfaces than can block them, raise it up a bit by putting a couple supports under it. Laptop coolers are generally pretty inexpensive, compared to repairs.

Re: How do I allocate drive space to dual boot with Windows

The advice I've most frequently seen given here is to use W7 tools to free up the drive space. Defrag and cleanup first.

I left Windows at XP, so I can't be more specific.

Re: Katya Crashes

There have been some comments here that the 2.6.38.8 kernel poses problems with some machines. Any chance it is running hot and disrupting the video card or chip? If you want to try a newer kernel, enable levels 4 and 5 in the update manager, refresh and choose the 3(?) 2.6.38.11 files listed. Then ...

Re: Spotify - Not Playing, Bad File Format

I see that Spotify has a help page for wine users. They also have a Linux version: http://www.spotify.com/us/download/previews/ . You may want to try that.

In CompizConfig Settings Manager there is a Session Management plugin. You might need the Compiz Extras package first. It is still in Beta, so ....

Ubuntu Tweak seems to offer something similar. I haven't tested either.

Get rid of it and install wine from the Package Manager. That version was for those working as developers, as the previous post suggests.

Re: How to delete unused kernels from Grub menu?

Ahh, thank you Vincent. At least I am getting enough of a hang of Linux to see when I might be doing things the wrong, and harder, way.

Your answer says that it it is even simpler than I thought. Get rid of a kernel is as easily as getting rid of any installed app.

How to delete unused kernels from Grub menu? [SOLVED]

I think I know the answer. Delete those 5-6 files from /boot that contain the string that identified the unwanted version and then do sudo update-grub. Is there something I am missing or and hazards to be aware of, or is it as straightforward and simple as it seems. Thanks for any advice. Edit to ad...

Re: How do I launch an application from the desktop?

Have you tried to right click and choose Make link? The drag-drop the link on the Desktop. That just creates a shortcut to the executable.

It's the easiest method I have found.

Re: Login customisation: Faenza icons not shown

To protect the basic Linux OS from unwanted intrusion, changing things there requires that the changes be done only by the system admin. If you right click on the /usr/share/icons folder, one option is to Open as Administrator. You will be asked to type your password, the one you login with, and the...

Re: Help Files will not open

The fix was for help files in general. Many will now work, assuming the appropriate documentation is installed. Later comments describe how to add some that are missing. The one you are looking for appears to be gnome-user-guide. The last comment in that thread tells how to add it. You could also ru...

Re: Laptop Function Key (Fn+F2) for bluetooth not working

What command are you assigning via the Keyboard Shortcuts to those key combos. If you post here the commands you are actually trying to use when you hit those keys, maybe someone using bluetooth can see what is wrong with them and offer better help.

Re: Laptop Function Key (Fn+F2) for bluetooth not working

In Gnome, under Preferences/Keyboard Shortcuts, you can create custom shortcuts.

If you know the command that toggles bluetooth, you can enter that command and a key combo to call it.

Enjoy!

Re: DVD rom problem..

Have you looked in Nautilus, the file browser (assuming you are using the Gnome edition)?

If not, go to Edit/Preferences and open the Media tab. There you can set which applications get used to handle various kinds of media, including DVDs.

Play around and have fun!.

Re: I try to add shortcut from menu on dekstop but fail

Right click on the Desktop icon and look at the Permissions tab. Make sure "Mark as executable" is checked.

When I followed your steps it was checked when created, but when I unchecked that box I got the same error message your video displayed.

And, have fun!

Used and loved computers since teletypes and rolls of binary punched paper tape was storage. The C64 was a delight, but the A1000 was AWESOME!!! . OK, not enough exclamation points to express that WOW! and I think the "Huge" font would just be annoying. I had tried a bit of Linux since the Amiga beg...
