Re: sftp working on windows but not on mint

Hi ghervasze!

You can connect to SFTP sites simply using Nemo (put sftp://serverip:2100) or using sftp from the terminal (sftp user@serverip:2100). Do either of these allow you to properly put files on the remote site?

Cheers!

Re: Wireless on ThinkPad X60 not working

Hi Matthai,

Can you go into more detail please about what is not working for your wireless connection?
-Does the adapter show up in NetworkManager?
-Are you able to see available wireless networks? How far do you get in the connection process?

Cheers!

Re: Unable to block the USB ports

Hi Ameya88,

Have you considered simply disabling the USB ports from the BIOS? Access to the BIOS could be password protected to prevent unauthorized changes (re-enabling ports, etc).

Cheers!

Re: gFTP Command Line Syntax

Hi MichaelJohn, gFTP is really not suitable for running FTP jobs from the command line. The command line syntax is just to pass options to the gui client when it starts up. Have you tried using wget for this process instead? It allows you to pass FTP options and is completely cli based. If you want ...

Re: Firewall rule for FTP allowing unique IP address in inpu

Hi Philippe, The issue with your restricted rule is the source port. Most of the time when a client connect to a server (say for HTTP or FTP), the TCP port they open to connect to you is not the same port as the server hosting port. Usually it is a random port that is opened above TCP/1024. So when ...

Re: Trouble accessing Windows 8.1 PC files on my network

Hi jsluk, So here are a couple of things to confirm... -no firewalls are running on the Windows PC or if they are running, that you have an allow rule to permit the Mint PC to talk to the Windows PC. Many Windows antivirus products now include a firewall that blocks a lot by default. It would be man...

I would look at what extensions and plugins you have enabled and start disabling them to find the culprit.

The latest version for Linux is available in the Software Manager. This is generally the best way to install it.

Re: Limit Directory Access for FTP Access

So is there an issue setting the user home directories to the intended target directory that they need access to and keeping them solely contained to that directory? It's not clear what is required for the users in whole. You can create a user group for these users and allow them to only open certai...

Re: Limit Directory Access for FTP Access

Hi MichaelJohn, The feature you are looking for is termed chroot. See here for configuring a restricted directory for users. http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/vsftp-chroot-users-limit-to-only-their-home-directory.html So you could set the home directory for the desired accounts to the target directory t...

Re: Joining Linux mint 17.1 cinnamon to windows Active direc

Hi MrBrown90! Mint uses MDM (Mint Display Manager) instead of LightDM for the login screen portion of the desktop. MDM behaves very much like LightDM though so you can probably edit the distro config file for MDM instead and achieve the desired results. sudo gedit /usr/share/mdm/distro.conf However,...

Hi Fillister,

Looking through your configs, I don't see and shares defined except the Printers which won't show anything unless you have one installed and shared.

You may need to re-create the shares for your folders.

Hi BlindGhoulie and welcome to Mint! You're asking good questions and certainly on the right topic for the state of the Internet today. Security is probably the broadest and most challenging thing to cover for technology from this point forward. But let's stick to some basics here. Let's breakout yo...

Hi!

Assuming you are using OpenVPN for your connection to Cyberghost, then see this page for how to configure an exclusion by IP or domain name.

Re: Mint 17 refuses to mount any type of Windows hard drive

Unless it is a very old version of Windows (before Windows 2000), then it is probably an NTFS partition as that is the default filesystem for all versions of Windows from 2000 to Win7 (maybe Win8?).

Re: Smart TV + How to connect

Hi CrtlAltDel,

What you are looking for is a streaming media server software to run on your Mint machine and offer up media files for your TV to pull across the network.
An easy to use option that should work with your TV (mostly) is PS3MediaServer.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install ps3mediaserver

Re: How to Change GRUB Boot Loader

Hi Krishna, First, you may want to look into upgrading to a supported version of Mint as LM12 is not an LTS release and is no longer under support. To do that and put Windows 8 in place of Ubuntu... The following will work if you are using non-UEFI install mode for Win8. I cannot speak to the UEFI m...
