Re: Boot issue on new computer

I think the problem is that you installed Mint in legacy mode to your drive. But your drive is GPT partitioned, so installing in legacy mode is not the best thing to do. The Boot Report says that Grub is installed to the MBR. But GPT partitioned discs do not have a MBR - so they create a fake MBR t...

Re: Boot issue on new computer

I did delete Windows and install Linux. I have the computer set to Legacy Mode, and I just assumed that Linux woudl install to boot that way. Is there a way to check?

Cause you hit it with the system is not finding anything to boot from.

Re: Boot issue on new computer

More info: Looks like I need a driver to preload for Realtek. I have downloaded the tar ball and attempted installation, but I am awful at command line. Hoping for some help. I get these instructions in a readme file: This is the Linux device driver released for RealTek RTL8101E, RTL8102E(L) and RTL...

[SOLVED] Boot issue on new computer

Got past the Secure Boot issues that I had when I started, and got Mint 17.1 Cinnamon installed on a new machine. Ran into entirely new problem that I never would have anticipated. When I turn the computer on, It goes into a black screen with several lines of text. The most important of these seems ...

Need to disable Secure Boot on new machine [SOLVED]

Looked through this forum, did not find my issue. I just got a new computer, HP Pavillion, with Windows 8. I want to get rid of Windows and go to only Mint 17.1 (and the ones that come later). But I cannot figure out how to permanently disable Secure Boot so that I can install and use Linux. I can g...

Re: Steam in wine

Video card is a [AMD/ATI] RS880 [Radeon HD 4250]. But when I open additional drivers, it just says that there are no proprietary drivers in use on the system. Does not give me any options to install any. I love Linux, but sometimes I feel like a complete noob, when I do not know how to get simple th...

Re: Steam in wine

Thanks for the tips. What I did was install it on another machine that runs Win8 and then download it from Steam onto my computer. Mostly works fine. But my screen and map are black. I cannot ee anything other than my units. Will try to throw up a screenshot so everyone can see what I mean. I tried ...

Re: Steam in wine

I will give that a try. The last time I downloaded Steam for Linux, it told that Civ would not work. But I will check again tomorrow. Thank you. Will it matter if I have the disk for Civilization instead of the download, though? If so, I guess I could install it to my account on one of the Windows m...

Re: Steam in wine

Apologies for reviving this thread, but I have a similar question and did not really want to start a new thread. I tried running steam in Mint 16 Cinnamon, because I want to play Civilization V on my own box. It did not work out well. Could not run DirectX 10/11, only 9. Screen looked all wrong, cou...

Low-Level Updates

I just got around to installing Qiana, and ran the updater. Everything works, of course. But there are several low-level updates listed after I update, and I am wondering if they are safe to install. I have always stuck with the high-level updates and let the people upstream, who know a lot more tha...

Re: GTK+ themes?

Thank you for the info. I still cannot get Plasma Shock to show up in Controls, but I am getting used to what I am using. In some ways it is actually better.

I will also keep trying things. You were a big help.

GTK+ themes? [SOLVED]

I just installed Mint 15 with Cinnamon. I lie it a lot so far, of course. But I have found one problem that I have been unable to figure out. I use to be able to set all of my system themes, including the GTK+ theme, which I think is where I set the part of the theme that I am looking for. I want to...

Random wallpaper on startup

I was wondering if there was a way to have the desktop wallpaper randomly selected on each new startup or login, from within a given folder. I use Cinnamon DE. There was a post in 2009 about how to do it, but I was wondering if there was anything new on it. Maybe it has been written into a DE or the...

Re: [SOLVED] Cinnamon very slow on NVIDIA NV36

I had the stupid thing taken out. I don't really need dual monitors. And the guy at the computer shop said that the onboard one is better than the one I had stuck in there anyway.

[SOLVED] Where are my minimized windows?

I just installed Mint 14 with MATE. I have not used MATE before, so am learning to play with it. But I am having a problem that whenever I minimize a window, it does not show on the panel. I have never encountered this in any DE. Can someone help me out?

Thank you for all help.

Re: Cinnamon very slow on NVIDIA NV36

When I tried it without the drivers on the installed version, the screen looked like Gnome 2.0, but it seemed like not all the apps showed up in the menu. For instance, there was no poewr option in the menu. Just tried booting into the live disk, and it seemed to open just fine, and I got what appea...

Re: Cinnamon very slow on NVIDIA NV36

I haven't set up dual monitors yet. I think I will get a newer card first. The rest of the machine is less than a year old so I don't want a garbage card in there.

Thanks.
