Re: nVidia Drivers and Random Blank Screen?

Well i just switched to the other nVidia driver available in 'Additional Drivers', version 173? And it doesn't happen any more. Hmm... i'm going to flag this as solved but disappointed with nVidia. This is with an 8400GS 256MB? for anybody that cares to find this. Would be interesting to see the per...

Re: nVidia Drivers and Random Blank Screen?

Hmm, did that, rebooted and it doesn't look like Compiz is running, however the problem still persists - it just seems to be a little less predictable (as in, it might not happen every time or straight away). That leads me to think it's a problem with resources, so maybe with the nVidia driver. How ...

[SOLVED]nVidia Drivers and Random Blank Screen?

Well i recently rebuilt my PC (clean up, swap some components out to make it quieter etc.) and in the process i changed the HDD, so i took the chance to do a fresh installation of Mint (i'll get round to dual-booting Arch again in a bit). Anyway, most of it works great and it's even better than i re...

Re: Replacing GIMP

I think Pinta should be the default, GIMP is somewhat daunting to the beginner and is a bit bloated when you just want to do something like crop/resize a picture. Pinta does have some bugs but it overall a lot better for a basic image editor, better than the Paint clones that look dated or childish ...

Re: Husse

That worked brilliantly, cheers. I took the text files from my old Min 9 Live CD, copied them into /usr/share/fortune (games doesn't seem to exist in Arch), along with a few others then ran 'sudo strfile [filename] [filename].dat. After ironing out a few problems with conky cutting text off: Screens...

Husse

Well i've since moved on to far more stupid things (Arch) i've been missing the Husse quotes fortunes. Plan is to put them in Conky using shuf, i was wondering if there's a .list file with all of them in somewhere? Or even just a list, i'm quite competent with copying and pasting. While i'm at it, b...

Re: Which Mobo/CPU combo should I go with?

i7 RAM is nearly all triple channel, not sure if it works in dual channel motherboards. Either way you shouldn't have to apply ANY force to install a CPU, it just sits in then (on an Intel socket) you lock it down. If you do then you should stop, because something is seriously wrong. Anyway, as for ...

Re: What silly things have you done? (on a PC)

I had this P4 laptop i kinda inherited... well you know how they have horrible problems with overheating? Mine did, and it froze the OS (XP) every time. I had a way around this though, the only way to unfreeze it would be to press the power button. But of course, this would turn it off. So the first...

Re: Linux versus Win7

My netbook came with XP pre-installed, and last year I sat in on a teleconference just before Win 7 was released. My impression was that it was still about 1 release behind Mac OS , and about on a par with the release of Ubuntu (9.04) that I was using at that time. Nothing has happened since then t...

Re: Best browser for Linux?

Opera's okay, and i use Opera Mini on my phone but i really wouldn't say it's the best browser for Linux for no reason other than that it isn't Open Source.

Re: What song are you listening to at the moment?

I think there's more good music around today than ever, it's just much harder to find. http://www.thehonestjohns.co.uk/listen.html http://paddynash.co.uk/web/music.asp Honest Johns, Alexi Murdoch, Paddy Nash... all fantastic musicians that nobody has heard of, but could easily top the charts in a fa...

XFCE is the lightest of the compositing desktop environments, LXDE is a different league.

Re: Best browser for Linux?

I've gotta say Chromium. I still love Firefox, and respect it for being such a great piece of software. FF4 may change my mind but Chromium is just so much faster, uses less RAM and has a much nicer interface in my opinion. I've never had any problems with Java, Flash or websites not opening.

Okay, so say it's between the Compaq Mini 311c and the Asus Eee 1001P. Compaq Mini 311c - £250 Larger screen, higher resolution Better graphics Altec Lansing speakers Shorter battery life Less portable Asus Eee 1001P - £230 Slightly faster CPU Lower power draw Far longer battery life More portable S...

Considering Downsizing...

Well my desktop is getting on a bit, technically it's a Compaq Pressario but all that really exists from that any more is the CPU, Motherboard and RAM. I could easily sell this stuff i've got lying around for £200, which makes a Compaq Mini 311c at £250 on Amazon look rather tempting. Especially if ...

You can claim money back, if you never boot into Windows and don't accept the terms & conditions (you know, the 'you own my soul' bit). http://www.bitterwallet.com/pc-user-refunded-for-not-using-windows/20003 The Microsoft Windows End User License Agreement means accepting terms of use as soon a...
