If you are bored with Mint, try installing LInux From Scratch or "Go nuts with NuTyX".

Re: Linux programs come to Chromebooks
I have a budget Samsung 3 Chromebook and it would be nice to be able to run LibreOffice on it. I use a lot of spreadsheets, some with personal information, and prefer to keep them stored locally. One advantage of a Chromebook, even the cheap ones, is the ability to run games and apps from the Google...

It really sounds good. I'll have to try Mint 19 (along side 18.3). I haven't missed many Mint editions. The only one I didn't like was the Fluxbox version way back when.

Another vote for Peppermint 8. Running on an old Compaq laptop, it only uses 193 MB out of 2 GB ram. I like it a lot.

It was down for several days for me also. I contacted jimallyn and he has been checking it out. Today it's working fine. It must have been a Florida thing. Too much sunshine?

Re: Daylight Savings Time, Like it or Hate it?
I prefer the sun to be at its zenith at mid-day. Then you would have to be on local time for your exact location. If you are a little east or west of your time zone's meridian, then the sun isn't directly overhead at noon. Even then, mid-day would vary up to 16 minutes and 33 seconds due to variati...

Re: Daylight Savings Time, Like it or Hate it?
The Florida legislature has overwhelmingly just passed the "Sunshine Protection Act" and the bill is on the governor's desk. This bill would put Florida on Daylight Savings Time permanently. It will still have to be approved by the US congress to take effect, and several Florida senators i...

Re: When did you come to Linux?
I came to Mint in 2006, installing Barbara (Mint 2.0) on a newly built computer. I first tried Ubuntu on it but the hard drive would spin up at high speed and it wouldn't load anything (it was a free disk sent from Ubuntu, when they did things like that). I had run PCLinux "Big Daddy" on m...

Re: Let's remember to use httpS for images/avatars... :)
Xenopeek made sure earlier this year that new avatars can only be with an https link. You can also use gravatar now. If I remember correctly, he converted a lot of avatars to https also. It must be impossible to meet an http avatar nowadays on the forum with all the good work he did. :mrgree...

Re: What would you use if Mint wasn't available?
I've tried quite a number of Linux distributions and there are some nice ones out there. I like Peppermint and Xubuntu, especially for low end systems. Zorin and LXLE have also run well on my computers. Ubuntu Mate is nice and Ubuntu Budgie looks promising. As you can tell, I favor the Debian/'Buntu...

More likely as additions (UCF along with USF) to the Big12. The Big12 has been considering adding a couple of teams on and off for several years now to bring their numbers up to 12 in football. I'm sure they would like to have a shot at the Florida market. What I was really trying to get at is, do ...

Re: NFL Fantasy Football
We're still upset over the whole Power 5/ Group of 5 thing. UCF declared themselves national champions and the governor agreed. The state might even issue a National Champion license tag for UCF! I'm not familiar with that conference. From what you saw happen over the past few years do you think UC...

I had season tickets to the Tampa Bay Bucs first season. Maybe went to half the games. Not very interested in pro football these days, but do support my school's team, USF, who play in the same stadium as the Bucs. I did enjoy the Superbowl though. Glad the Eagles won as I was raised about 80 miles...

Re: Grub Customizer: why you shouldn't use it
I removed it when I upgraded to Mint 8.3 and boot time improved significantly.
I was using it because I normally have 2 or 3 distributions installed on this computer and it was an easy way to make it boot to a specific one. Though It's simple enough to edit Grub to do that.

Re: Net Neutrality
(For you economists): Without Net Neutrality we could call it "trickle-down internet." We'll get what's left over after the big players take their share.
