Re: Which Flavor of Mint 8

I would start with the "main" flavor, Linux Mint 8 "Helena" (http://www.linuxmint.com/blog/?p=1155) which includes Gnome as its desktop environment. Fluxbox is not a desktop environment, per se, but a window manager. A desktop environment provides a good bit of "look and feel" and "ease of use" to t...

Re: Mint burns laptops, please don't leave it to another distr

I have a H/P laptop which overheats on a regular basis. I discovered after trying an assortment of fixes that it was caused by collection of lint piled up on one side of the microprocessor heatsink inside the Laptop. G. You obviously need to begin a new thread -- may I suggest "Lint burns laptops"?...

Re: 32-bit or 64-bit KDE first?

Would this be a fair statement? Those that need 32-bit because of aging hardware (I'm there, normally) might be a little more patient in the outcome than those that desire 64-bit on more modern systems (like my children's laptop for school). It is interesting the lag between 64-bit software coming t...

Re: Marketing proposal: KDE to became the default DE for Mint 10

if there was an x64 KDE version of Mint, I'd run that. Right now there's not. I know I could install KDE, etc, and weed out the Gnome apps I don't like... But it's really not a problem. I've been x64 now for 6 years (on different distros), but right now I'd rather enjoy the "out of the box" experie...

Re: Why DVD?

Boy howdy, do I feel like a dummy. One of my old laptops has DVD-ROM capability after all so I downloaded the ISO and burned it on my wife's iMac. The DVD boots but I am having the same issue with what I call "blank rectangles" (actually, transparent would be a better term -- the desktop shows where...

Re: Why DVD?

If your laptop is really that old, you may be happy with Linux Mint 7 Xfce . I use it on some of my older PCs, and I'm very satisfied with it. Otherwise for KDE, if you really can't install Linux Mint 8 KDE , and aren't interested in Kubuntu or Debian KDE, I had luck with PCLinuxOS and Mandriva KDE...

Re: Why DVD?

I would like to know what the best non-DVD option is for a laptop with broadband access (ADSL), but no... ...DVD (CD-only) ...USB boot support (old laptop) I have installed Helena Gnome I have installed Debian Lenny KDE I have installed Kubuntu Karmic Koala Karmic didn't live long as I gave up the s...

Re: Mint burns laptops, please don't leave it to another distr

Given these threads... I was rather nervously curious when I installed Mint 8 on a new Samsung R522 that I bought the wife for Christmas. It's had about four weeks of Mint usage... and going well! First, I'm glad things are going well. Mint8 is impressive to say the least. Second, what I have been ...

Re: Mint burns laptops, please don't leave it to another distr

This is in the end controlled by BIOS If for some reason the fans do not start or run properly the BIOS will shut down the computer before it is in danger of being destroyed While I certainly agree, the problem I had -- and I think it is at least similar to The Picker 's issue -- seemed to be a sof...

Re: Merry X-mas

Merry X-mas indeed!
(from a X-tian, arm-chair history buff and lexicology student)

Side note: Linux Mint 8 is the first Gnome installation that has been usable on this old iron in quite some time.

Kudos yet again to the team!

Re: Helena KDE CE update

Will there be a Live CD? I have a couple old laptops I'm using and neither one has DVD capability. I guess it should go without saying that USB-boot is also not an option. If the Live ISO is a DVD I would like an alternative installation method and am open to suggestions. Installed on at least one s...

Re: Installing KDE CE on Gloria Gnome

I'd really like to start using KDE, because I like KDE apps...<snip> You can use KDE apps within gnome actually. If you install a KDE app, such as Kate (I believe that's one), it'll automatically select the necessary libraries and you can run the application like normal without having to switch des...

Re: Xubuntu Speed Comparison?

Xubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 seemed to be pretty sluggish compared to Gloria/xfce. New to Mint. Thought I'd chime in. Recently trying several distros on two old Dell laptops (P-III, P4). So far, I'm really pleased with Gloria/xfce. Felicia/FluxBox wasn't all that great an experience and I really wonder why...
