Re: List Known Laptops that can support Linux Mint

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=3559543&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us My laptop (HP Pavilion Dv2700 series) is ideal if you want to run a GNU/Linux distro out of the box. Vista didn't work properly, so what I intended to be a dual boot quickly became Ubuntu-only, then Mint. I h...

Re: Going from Gnome to KDE

clgy15 wrote:Thats exactly what im wondering. What would the difference be between installing KDE in 8 and the full KDE CE?
In short, Mint KDE CE = a KDE distro. Installing kubuntu-desktop on Mint 8 is installing Kubuntu's packages, making it look and act like Kubuntu.

Re: Anti FOSS Encounters

There's a difference when they say that I am not permitted to use my own laptop/desktop to do the courses. =p Edit: I noticed you put "Free" in quotations. The computer was free; it's covered by the school. I asked about this. They told me that with online courses involving their computers, there's ...

Anti FOSS Encounters

I'm just wondering if anybody has experienced blatant Anti-competition situations for work, school or even internet cafes. For example.. I am taking online courses and I was required to have a "Standard" computer sent to me for free. So I accepted, but when I obtained it.. it was dreadful. Glitched ...

Re: Keep Gimp in Mint 9!

I think GIMP should be left on it. It's one of the softwares I use to show new users about Linux on a live CD. OpenOffice is the one that I think should be left out, if anything; it's big and isn't really needed on a live CD. Replace it with Abiword like Fedora does.

Re: How many times did you break your first linux install?

I broke my first Linux install. But, I do not think it was my fault. I wanted to dual boot Ubuntu and OpenSUSE to see how it would work. I resized my partitions using gparted, and put SUSE on the new 30 GB partition I made on my 250 GB laptop. I rebooted, and the computer wouldn't go past the HP Spl...

Re: How do you feel about the GPL and "copyleft"?

I love the GPL, but the BSD license(s) are more favourable to me and many others. They both have their place though. BSD is best for business, GPL is best for non-profit/etc related stuff. Not restricted to those of course, but that's how it is in my mind by default. BSD license allowed Apple's open...

Re: Windows 7 without IE... why?

I really hate IE. IE8 wasn't anything great to me (I tried it because I am not close-minded enough to shun MS products, same with 7). Shunning MS products doesn't necessarily make one close-minded. You misunderstood me there. I am talking about the Apple/Linux fanboys who shun "Micro$haft" products...

Apple's Safari

Two questions here... 1) Why do you think Apple avoids releasing Software for GNU/Linux despite claiming to embrace and support open source? 2) Is Safari Free (libre)? I bring this up because I recently bought a MacBook due to needing a more compatible OS than GNU/Linux.. and I would much rather spe...

Re: Windows 7 without IE... why?

The main problem wasn't with the fact that IE was bundled with Windows, it was more to do with the way that it was impossible to remove... Ahhh that. But I think this is more about having it as the default, which is odd considering nobody cares about bundling other browsers. Sony + Chrome for examp...

KDE appears to be much more energy efficient than Gnome

I have been using Gnome for about 2 years. I sometimes dabbed with KDE 3, but only on Desktops. I used to get angry at how horribly fast my laptop would run out of battery power. I'd have to scramble to find the cord every 45 minutes (the laptop has always been this bad) even when just doing somethi...

Windows 7 without IE... why?

After Opera's antitrust complaint, Microsoft must ship Windows 7 without IE and give options to the user as to which browser they wish to use (EU). This is old news, but I have a question.. Is this only because of Microsoft's market share? Apple bundles Safari, Ubuntu/RedHat/SLED bundle Firefox, etc...

Not sure if this will work, but I found this..

" A filter to translate MTF/BKF backup streams from aNoTher operating system, to the TAR archves used by the rest of the world. "

Re: Hi Everyone! I just converted! ... now about my Blackberry

What they mean is when you press the volume control keys on your keyboard, does it show up on the screen? Anyway, try plugging in a headset. Also, make sure your volume levels are not set to a certain area (mic output instead of master). Strange that the sound won't work. Also remember, if Mint does...

Re: Why DVD?

I believe it's because KDE takes up allot more space then gnome but I'm sure someone else who's a bit more clued up then me will give a more definite answer  Loads of distros use KDE and are the same size as Gnome iso's. The gtk libs.. that makes sense. Looks like I will need to wait some tim...

Why DVD?

I'm wondering why the KDE CE is a DVD while Main is a CD? Reason I ask is that I prefer KDE, but it is hard to find a place that sells DVD-R discs (small town) and ordering online can be inconvenient. I'm not saying "make it a 680MB CD image", I'm just curious as to why it's a "DVD distro". Having t...

Re: Common home with Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 makes problems

Whenever I upgrade/switch distros I back up my /home directory. I then do a totally fresh install of Linux. Then, I add files as I need them in the fresh install. This eliminates both clutter and errors. The only files I copy back over are ~/Pictures, ~/Music and ~/Documents due to the fact they are...
