Re: Just a simple question

...what would Linux Mint do if Ubuntu quit ? My personal, uneducated speculation is, that I would think that it would initially continue under the last-available Ubuntu base, then the Mint team would select another base to move into the future with. ...a total independent Linux Mint would be a drea...

Re: installing linux mint 8 without a cd/dvd rom

...this computer runs an intel 6500 dual core 2.13 gig, 2gig ram in dual channel, and I read that the 64bit mint 8 will run better on this machine than the 32bit. I'd research that claim. I've heard that 64-bit boxes that have less than 4 GB RAM should run the 32-bit version of Mint. Also, here's w...

Re: Fresh Install

I want to organize Music/photos and browse the web on the laptop which is the best light build in your opinions? Did you confirm that Linux Mint Xfce doesn't work for you? If it does, that would definitely be my choice. It runs on all my older boxes, and I'm reasonably confident a couple of them on...

Re: Problems Installing hplip to Scan with Photosmart 2710

This is the problem I've run into before too many differing instruction sets on doing this with out clear details as to what needs to be done etc.. or requires "w" OS access which I no longer have, and specifically have let knowledge on lapse. Sorry that you're having problems, but what's not clear...

Re: I need to introduce myself

I am not afraid to mess with commands, that might jeopardize an installation, but this is how I learn. Try installing BSD or Slackware, one would think they are stuck in the past. A good knowledge of the command line and a reading of documents before any install of these. May seem crazy to have sev...

Re: Just tried Mint KDE CE...

I think next releases of Linux Mint should be 64 bit first, 32 bit later ... tests show that the 64 bit kernel is WAY faster than the 32bit kernel, and many people have 4GB RAM today. To be honest, I am not one of them but of course my CPU supports 64bit instructions and my computer is quite old wh...

Re: Just tried Mint KDE CE...

Two minor points, on the partitioning part of the install, I went to the advanced screen (I think it was called) because I wanted to use partitions I had already set up. The window that showed the existing partitions was fairly small and couldn't be maximized. I couldn't read the partition labels, ...

Re: LiveCD won't Boot?

Yeah, the only thing that doesn't makes sense is why the bios (during boot up) would care what happened while Linux was running? Pure Uneducated Speculation: Perhaps as optical drives these days hold a "last known state" or something in EPROM? e.g., to know where a movie was stopped so it can start...

Re: LiveCD won't Boot?

About a three days ago, I plopped in a DVD (Movie) and never finished it. I hibernated the computer. Then I forgot that I had hibernated the computer and wanted to try Mint. So, I turned on the laptop and before Grub kicked in, I physically (with my finger) ejected the DVD. From that point on, the ...

Be sure to wait a few days for the final version of Mint 8 KDE to be officially released. People are still sorting thru a few minor bugs in the testing release.

Excellent. Keep in mind, it not being the final release means that there are apparently a few bugs left to tweak for the development team.

Re: LiveCD won't Boot?

Is it possible that grub is somehow interfering with the LiveCDs? If you're confident that the CD drive is being accessed first in the boot order (as it sounds like you are), then I don't believe the MBR on the hard drive would even be accessed at the time the CD boot is attempted, and therefore BI...

Re: Dual-Boot Mint8

I'm surprised no one else has said this. Be sure you have a copy of windows on hand or a repair disk. Windows won't load right after you install another OS. You will need to boot the computer from the repair disk and let it repair windows. I'm not saying that you're wrong, but I've certainly never ...

To augment bobcollard's post, I'd give Mint 8 KDE a try once it goes final. I was a Gnome man myself for a number of years, but as dequire said, there's much more to KDE than "eye candy", and it has since converted me.

Honestly I'd rather do too much testing than not enough. Agreed. While it probably is "good enough" for most members here to use, once you start saying "Oh, it's good enough. We'll sort anything else out later!" it's a slippery slope. Much respect to all that've put work in to making sure everythin...

It is indeed frustrating to be patient, and I speak from first-hand experience, believe me. Especially when oth...
