host file block site not working

Hi I googled and not joy with this. Using 64 bit mint 14 maya fully updated, noscript, ghostery, and adblock plus. Etherape shows this url being accessed when I run firefox, even though I have only accessed the local router: ch4plpkivs-v03.any.prod.ord1.secureserver.net I have added the following to...

Re: Network manager not running

just a reminder...delete the network configurations using the tab in Menu-->All-->Network NOT the one in Menu-->All-->Network Configuration (which is the same as "Edit Connections" in the Network Manager utility.
Just to be sure ;)

Re: USB WiFi Dongle - Help !

I think any with the Prolific or the FTDI chips will work. I prefer the FTDI..I used both of them, but the FTDI seemed better supported then the Prolific.

Re: Network manager not running

This happened to me when I was twiddling about trying to get the cell fone tethering (see my recent post re verizon). The solution was to open the Network tab in the menu and delete all the dial up settings, and then reboot. I noticed that when network manager showed up in the bar, that the wireless...

Editing repos in synaptic broken?

The kernel is 3.2.0-34-generic on an hp laptop x86_64. The OS is LinuxMint Release: 13 (maya) Edition: MATE 64-bit It is updated as of today. synaptic is version 0.75.9ubuntu1. I notice that in synaptic, settings-->repositories does not do anything. Previously, I could edit the sources.list graphica...

Re: text Select blackout in Abiword

Thanks for the quick reply...actually, the blackout occurs with txt, and with richtext files as well. Abiword version is the same as yours. Nvidia 173 is the GPU, but that should not matter since gedit and pluma work correctly. This is a LM 12 with mate desktop, and is updated as of this morning. No...

text Select blackout in Abiword

If I load a .doc into Abiword, and then Select any portion of that file, the text is completly blacked out. This does not happen in Pluma nor in Gedit, and also does not happen in Abiword distributed in Debian Squeeze. What can I do to get highlighting back to normal? Using mint Mate. uname -r yield...

Re: udev and udev-mtab services ,, running or not?

heh heh, gotjazz,
Your suggestion made me wonder...I ran service --status-all, and got a (?), meaning I guess the OS does not know? So, I guess I am still no wiser.

Re: udev and udev-mtab services ,, running or not?

kruijf, Thank you. I am now starting to wonder if perhaps udev is now in the kernel? For anyone who happens to tick udev on in the gui service tool; you may lose the keyboard, then be unable to type in the password to untick it. There are a couple of ways out of this...you need another computer or a...

Re: udev and udev-mtab services ,, running or not?

@bitmason,
Agreed, but mine is not running, and if I start it, it kills the keyboard, and screw up USB. Are you running LMDE all updated, and did you check the services screen on your machine?

Regards.

udev and udev-mtab services ,, running or not?

Hi, Would a few of you running LMDE 32 bit please post whether or not in Administration..Services have "udev" and/or "udev-mtab" services ticked? I have been having problems with Nvidia-settings not working, and googleing seems to indicate a problem with udev. I cannot recall if it were ticked on in...

Re: nvidia-settings/udev problems

Ciaw, Sorry for the delay; we were out to a gathering around a campfire; it was a beautiful, calm, and warm evening. Anyway, I did have a look at your link, and downgraded those two files. Unfortunately, without the service udev running, on boot, I had no keyboard and essentially the same problem as...

Re: Nvidia drivers update issues

Yes, could be just text. OTOH, when I killed gdm3, the result was just a blank screen. Reboot did nothing for smxi. On the udev service issue...this was a fresh install and updated as of two nights ago, and just as in the 64 bit install, the udev service was not running. On both installs, when i sta...

Re: Nvidia drivers update issues

Ciaw, Thanks for the reply. I did do that, and it removed a couple of files related to the nvidia binary (173) install. Then the display was borked. So I edited xorg.conf to use vesa, and put things back. Actually, I don't think that the driver is not working, at least on the laptop screen, since I ...

Re: Nvidia drivers update issues

I followed (carefully) those smxi instructions...they did not work. I downloaded with wget, and chown the permissions. When I followed the instructions to kill gdm: no joy. I then killed gdm3, and that worked, but left me with a blank screen...real lack of joy there. So I rebooted, and tried running...

nvidia-settings/udev problems

Hi, I wonder if someone could offer some insight into what is going on: I had lmde 10 64 bit loaded on this hp amd64 laptop, and had problems with udev; so I reinstalled ldme 10 32 bit...same problems. I have been trying to install the nvidia driver via synaptic, and while it all installs okay, then...

Thank you for that tip and the rest of your scathing tips and criticisms. Re: How Odious the Deception

What I find somewhat deceptive is Mint's tactics insuring the continued use of Google's Search. Mint restores Firefox's google search xml on each reboot, unless one takes extraordinary steps to prevent this behavior. Check: /usr/share/linuxmint/adjustments/firefox, and /etc/linuxmint/adjustments The...

Re: Installer for LM 10 deleted all of my partitions

Don't feel too bad; I had occasion to do a test install of LM 10 last week. I DID partition the hard drive with gparted prior to the installation. I choose all ext 3 for /boot. /, /home, and a swap partition. I also formatted. When I ran the installer, it formatted to ext 4, without any prior warnin...
