Re: System Restore

Plus one for portable USB hard drive for backups. Rysnc (rotating) and either Clonezilla or Qt4-fsarchiver will get you out of anywhere.

Multisystem also have an ISO, which is Ubuntu based. Nothing to install, just use as a live cd.

I hope the government will make a stand and support open source computing. If they give in to Microsoft will MS soon be running the country! As mentioned, the employees will be the direct sufferers.

Re: Burn Multiple image files to 8.5 GB Disc

Research multisystem. This would put the isos on a fat32 USB, install grub, and enable you to boot the individual isos. Bear in mind that not all isos are bootable.
Just my idea - wait and see if a better solution is presented.

Re: Clone to SSD?

Qt4-fsarchiver is another option. Backup a partition(s) and then restore this backup file to the new SSD partition(s). Grub would need to installed to the new SSD and etc/fstab altered to reflect the new swap partition (assuming you have one). The difference with Clonezilla is that CZ creates an ima...

Re: stupid question about backups

@ Fred Barclay - I also use the .tar method as described in your link. To overcome having to reinstall a base system from DVD I made a Clonezilla image of the bare vanilla install and then just restore that image each time I break my system and release the .tar over it - very effective. Another posi...

You have to work through the packagages you want in Synaptic and click to reinstall each one. Then the script will work.

Re: create distribution from own modified installation

Qt4-fsarchiver can also clone a hard drive. The end result would be a file which can be installed elsewhere but you would not have an .iso to burn to DVD. It will also clone drive to drive directly.

Re: Encryption software before cloud upload..?

Personally, I will not use Cloud Storage because of security. I once found files not belonging to me in my Dropbox account.
IMO a second portable external hard drive is safer. It can be removed and stored in a safe place. However, I appreciate all our life situations vary.
