Re: Alternatives to Backup Tool

For file saving look at Grsync, Luckybackup, Backintime.

For image backups, look at Clonezilla and Redo Backup.

Re: Is my Clonezilla image fine?

Should be fine, Clonezilla uses compression to reduce the size.
Clonezilla also has the ability to check/verify the image - just select this option as you make your backup choices.

Re: Bleachbit. How to use it?

I wont't use Bleachbit -"apt-get autoremove" is safer IMO - preferably used after creating an image of your system.

Re: Custom Live CD/USB .iso from existing Mint install.

Download the Refracta Tools not the OS. It would be worth raising a query on their forum to see if anyone has used it on Mint.

Re: reinstalling without actually doing so

Synaptic has a similar feature. It can create a script of installed software which can be later used on a fresh install.

Re: Upgrading from XP to linux

Before you do anything, backup XP with a disk image and keep this somewhere safe. Secondly, the best advice is to use google plus the mint forum and read read read and read. All the information you require is out there and at the end of the day only you can do it!

Re: Backup ? TIA

That's correct - Synaptic can generate a "download" script" of all the software the user has installed themselves. When run the script will download said software automatically but not reconfigure the old settings. IMO still a functional method, which is the beauty of linux - various ways to achieve...
