Re: Let's Keep Mint Julia? on GNOME 2.x

Hello Everyone, personally, I'm not a fan of what appears to be a "complete" change in the way Gnome works. It seems to be changing for the sake of changing. Most of this is unnecessary. Where has it been asked for all this change? Over the top in my opinion. Agreed... I also was not under the impre...

Re: Let's Keep Mint Julia? on GNOME 2.x

Hello Again! :-) Every non-expert computer user I have ever known that switches from Windows to a Mac, would never switch back. "More intuitive" is what they cite first. Hmm, maybe, but personally I know several non-expert people who prefer Windows to Mac... I guess a large part of people's preferen...

Re: Did The Elegance Die?

Howdy... After all look at the GDM login for 7 then look at it in 8, it's gone and the excuse is, that Ubuntu did this. Actually, the new GDM isn't "Ubuntu's fault." If you want to "blame" (although that word is a bit harsh - I'll get to why in a second) someone, point the finger at the GNOME develo...

Re: Let's Keep Mint Julia? on GNOME 2.x

Hello Again All, Lumenary, I'm with you about Gnome 3. Gnome Shell may be the next crap after plasma in KDE. I fear Gnome 3 will be the next big failure after KDE 4... although since 4.3 KDE seems to be more usable. I've been playing around with KDE 4.3.x and I - for the most part - don't have any p...

Re: MintLooksSoGooD

Howdy... Yeah, I just replaced my venerable (before Lenovo) IBM ThinkPad R51 with an HP tx2z-1300: HP TouchSmart tx2z Series http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=notebooks&a1=Category&v1=Ultra-Portable&series_name=tx2z_series&jumpid=in_R...

Re: Upgrading Mint ... or wait for the LTS ??

Howdy... I'm probably gonna upgrade to Mint 9 (Isabella?) and stay there for a while. I do not like the direction that the GNOME.org folks are taking with regard to GNOME 3's new "Gnome Shell," so I can't see myself installing an Ubuntu 10.10-based distro (including what I am guessing will be called...

Re: Let's Keep Mint Julia? on GNOME 2.x

Hello Again! Sorry about the delay in replying; the Holidays have quite caught up with me... :-) Even if you disagree about the direction Gnome 3 is taking, sticking with Gnome 2 is not really an option, for the same reason that none of the major distros are sticking with KDE 3, it won't be supporte...

Let's Keep Mint Julia? on GNOME 2.x

Hello Everyone, I've been following the developments relating to GNOME 3 with quite a bit of interest, and must say that at present, I am not at all enthusiastic about the direction the GNOME organisation has taken. My concerns can mostly be enumerated as follows: 1. It takes too many mouse clicks t...

Re: Change the release schedule of Mint

Howdy... If there were a change to an annual release, it would be helpful to post two interim replacement spins (at 4 and 8 months) so new users would not be faced with several hundred updated files after an install. I like the idea of a yearly release - it harkens back to the earlier PCLinuxOS days...

Re: Change the release schedule of Mint

Howdy... What do others think of rolling releases? Based only on my experiences with PCLOS, I'm not a big fan of rolling releases for a couple of reasons. Wow... I was thinking the exact same thing last night regarding PCLinuxOS 2007. It started out as a relatively static distro, then in 2008 the PC...

Re: Change the release schedule of Mint

Howdy... More features and capabilities are added to the Linux kernel every 3 to 6 months than are added to Redmond's OS in 2 to 3 years. The Windows kernel, at its heart, is still using a substantial amount of code that has been brought forward from the NT 4 days (Vista's and Win7's enhanced securi...

Re: Change the release schedule of Mint

Howdy... I recently converted to Mint (by installing Gloria) after I decided that Ubuntu 8.04 LTS was getting a bit too long in the tooth. Gloria was a joy to use; it was stable, quick, and could take its fair share of abuse. I have since wiped my system clean and started over with Helena (I never d...
