Re: Desktop background reverts to default every boot/reboot

@Cosmo - Okay, here's something odd then. I checked permissions of that file in the callout ( ~/.cache/dconf/user) and it shows the "dconf" folder itself belongs to "root" and was created by the system upon install, not restored by me as I never restore any of the system config files or folders in t...

Re: Desktop background reverts to default every boot/reboot

Let us start at the beginning: Your output is not OK. But it is not a big deal, to make it correct: ...... Before I start changing things like permissions via the terminal I need to ask a question. First, a little background just so you know how Mint 18 was installed (single user only): This is a c...

Re: Desktop background reverts to default every boot/reboot

@Cosmo, Heh, this is the output of the command: /home/kmb42vt/.cache/dconf/user So it appears all is well? Of course, I booted up this morning and my selected background was there just as it's supposed to be which is typical. Bring your car to the mechanic and the car runs like new and all that. Ran...

Desktop background reverts to default every boot/reboot [solved]

Hi folks, Since the last update for Mint 18/Cinnamon of Mint related components my desktop background image reverts back to the Mint 18 default image every boot or reboot. Somehow the current background image isn't saved for the session. This is a clean install of Mint 18/Cinnamon (64-bit) with no m...

Re: What hapenned to the /opt/ directory in 17.3?

In LM 17.3 it is not more needed to store anything, previous versions of Mint used it store 2 FF-extension-packages. If you need it you can create it. In the terminal with sudo mkdir /opt Thanks for the reply. So basically Linux Mint doesn't need it for it's default installation so it's not created...

What hapenned to the /opt/ directory in 17.3?

I'm hardly a newbie having used Linux Mint as my main OS since almost the beginning but I just noticed that my 64-bit 17.3 installation (upgraded from 17.2) has no /opt/ directory. This is rather puzzeling becuase quite a applications, like Google Chrome and Google Earth for example, require the /op...

Re: Mint 17.3 Cinnamon (Rosa) installed and doing good

I'm having the NVIDIA-like problem, where I have to do "nomodeset" like the release notes say. Thing is, I have no NVIDIA card. What I have is the Intel Haswell HD graphics, so now that it is installed there are no proprietary drivers to fix the problem. I'm trying something now, otherwise if it do...

Re: Mint 17.3 Cinnamon (Rosa) installed and doing good

... There is no upgrade path for RC releases in any case.... Not sure what you mean by this... If you mean there is no (official) upgrade path from 17.2 to 17.3RC - that is correct. If you mean there is no upgrade path from 17.3RC to 17.3 stable - that is not exactly correct. If you install 17.3RC,...

Re: Mint 17.3 Cinnamon (Rosa) installed and doing good

By what I've seen (and for those wondering), 17.3 MATE and Cinnamon versions (both 32 bit and 64 bit) were approved for RC on November 16, 2015. These were uploaded to Mint's testing section of ftp.heanet the same day. All 4 ISOs are labeled "beta" which is probably why no announcement has been made...

Re: Laggy window controls (Cinnamon + NVIDIA)

Thanks for the testing! I'm looking forward to a NVIDIA-bug free world with the Rosa upgrade - 17.3 BTW: My new installation is going much slower than I could hope for. I am trying to install Mint on a SSD Raid0 array and this is proving to be a hard and tortuous way since Linux doesn't support har...

Re: Laggy window controls (Cinnamon + NVIDIA)

Just for general information, a similar fix for this problem in mutter was done for muffin/cinnamon. It is in 2.8 if you are using it already from Romeo or the cinnamon nightly builds ppa. Thanks for the info. It's always good to get confirmation on what you suspected was wrong. Especially when you...

Re: Laggy window controls (Cinnamon + NVIDIA)

You put a smile on my face because with the age I'm slowly getting there myself. When setting up this new rig I certainly felt my eyes beginning to strain. They keep on printing the labels and manuals smaller and smaller it seems  By the way, I disabled the Cinnamon Nightly PPA (Cinnamon 2.8 ...

Re: Laggy window controls (Cinnamon + NVIDIA)

That's indeed very good news! We should then expect the issue to be finally addressed with the Mint 17.3 update :D Do we have a release date already? I thought Rosa (17.3) was only due by the end of the year. Anyway from my side it's probably the end of the line for this issue since I'm upgrading m...

Re: Laggy window controls (Cinnamon + NVIDIA)

@LeBoy and others - After trying the "xorg.conf" solution and running the system for a good while, I found the problem (laggy windows controls, etc) was diminished but not completely eliminated. Going into the "Nvidia X server" application and setting "Performance levels" under "PowerMizer" to "Pref...

Re: Laggy window controls (Cinnamon + NVIDIA)

I think you nailed it. I did a similar research today and the problem seems to come down to a NVidia + Cinnamon bad marriage. I just saw your post now but our findings totally check. Both "Cinnamon" and "Mate" variations of Mint come from the GNOME desktop in their specific flavours "Muffin" and "M...

Re: Laggy window controls (Cinnamon + NVIDIA)

UPDATE: After a day of use, the Cinnamon DE as well as Firefox began acting worse than before modifying the ".nvidia-settins-rc" file. I won't go into all the details of troubleshooting I've done since then but in the end I had to revert to the open source "Nouveau" driver to power my Nvidia video c...

Re: Laggy window controls (Cinnamon + NVIDIA)

Its good to hear this trick is working for others as well. I have also tried the setting as 1 and for me seems a bit smoother for scrolling in Firefox so worth experimenting. It can only be 0-4 but I'm guessing higher numbers may make it worse. Its worth noting though that if this does work for you...

Re: [SOLVED] Laggy window controls (NVIDIA driver problem!)

I've had the exact same problem as has been described on this thread. Like a few others, I have older equipment including an Nvidia GT-430 w/1.0GB DDR3 ("media" card) that ran fine with Linux Mint/Cinnamon 17.0, 17.1 and the initial install of of 17.2 but after the last set of updates to Cinnamon (t...

Re: [Solved] Failed to fetch from any Ubuntu source.

kmb42vt; The device supplied by your ISP (same as my ISP!) still has a router that you should be able to configure. They generally don't give the average user instructions because the average user will create problems that they will end up fixing but you should be able to get into the router setup ...

Re: [Solved] Failed to fetch from any Ubuntu source.

If you disable IPv6 at the level of the router, it shouldn't matter whether the individual machines on your LAN have IPv6 enabled or not. I had an e-mail and updating problem that was a result of IPv6. It affected all the machines (including smart phones) on my home LAN. Disabling IPv6 at the level...
