Re: Google exec: 60% of businesses could dump Windows for Ch

Back when I was employed we bought a site license becase it was cheaper that getting the licesne from Dell or other providor that we delt with. MS is not that easy to uproot. Re: LMDE - Broadcom BCM4312 - how to make permanent?

Yes anytime you change the kernal you will have to reinstall the BC drivers. Now with that said Broadcom has released the drivers to open source so they should be included in the kernal, when this will happen I can't say. Mint isn't like Ubuntu as it doesn't change the kernal in the normal life cycl...

Re: Hard disk fails because of rsync backup?

Hi JasonLG, yes the S.M.A.R.T features for the drives are enabled, and I've been prompted during the boot, that the drive (sdb) is failure (or the message is likely similar to this). After several attempts (rebuilding the GPT, fdisk utilities, and a few other things), at last I managed to format th...

Re: Cannot install LMDE

Thanks Gramps50. What you suggested seemed to be the issue. Downloaded the iso again, checked md5 and this time it installed alright. Time for me to get to know LMDE! Glad it worked out and you got it installed. I like LMDE and can't wait for the update that is suppose to be out sometime in Dec no ...

Re: Cannot install LMDE

Sounds like you could have a bad cd image. Sometimes it is something as simple as fingerprint on the cd. I use automotive spray wax to clean my cd making sure that I wipe across the cd and not in a cicular motion. For some reason the CD/DVDs burn better if they are burnt at the slowest speed, so if ...

Re: What is the best manufacterer of laptops?

If you had said that 12 hour battery life was coming from anyone, I’m betting that Asus is not the name you would conjure up. Apple, maybe. HP, oh sure, it could be them. But Asus? Beyond that, it would seem improbable that the notebook in question would have a high end processor. Most would think i...

Re: Migrating /home to new install

edzell I always make 3 partitions when installing / (root) /home /swap (equal to just a little more than my total ram), I also install grsync on any and every distro I happen to install. Now to backup my data I use grsync (which is a gui for rsync) and backup my entire /home to an external usb HD. I...

Re: Moving from Mint 7 to 10 question

You did good I never do upgrades, have run into to many problems do it. So I backup my /home to an external drive and start fresh then just copy back my documents and other things. It's a little more work to start but has paid off in the long run for me.

Re: Remote Desktop Application for LM

That is an interesting idea, I have a friend who lives about 40 miles from me who is also running LM and is computer challenged. It would be handy if I could access him PC remotley. I have planned on researching this concept but just haven't had the time yet. I'm hoping some one reading this will ha...

HP Officejet 6500a Plus scanninig freezes

My old HP multi-functions printer was on it last legs so when I found the new Hp Officejset 6500a Plus on sale I snatched one up figuring that all the HP multifunction printer I have had in the past worked fine. I was a little disappointed when I discovered that when I tried the scanner it couldn't ...

Re: Flash doesn't work properly in Mint 10

Mint 10 is using Adobe Flash v10.2 and I can't say for sure but I'm going to guess that Mint 9 is using Adobe v9.x Also I think I read where there is an issue with 64 bit flash. Personally I don't seem to have issues but I don't normally watch Falsh at full screen so I might and don't know it.

Re: ubuntu 10.10 vs. Mint 10 on inspiron 1100

I would think that you could boot with the Mint 10 Live CD ( I would probably use the DVD if you have a DVD reader in the 1100) then you could test your hardware before installing. Seeing how Mint 10 is built on Ubuntu 10.10 I would guess that if the video worked in 10.10 it will also work in LM 10 ...
