Re: is my linux being hacked??

I would intend to agree with the above post. On that note I setup 2 different laptops for friends that came with Windows 7 on them. I didn't use any of the installed antivirus or malware scanners that came with the system, both trial ware. When doing the initial scan 2 specious programs were found o...

Re: A Useful Photo Program...

I have installed Picasa for quite a few Mint clients, they all love it ! great, right. however… picasa is not native, right? packed with wine? i only use wine if i absolutely have to and it's the whole universe's existance issue =) it's not some dumbheaded religious principle — i use atom-based net...

On my older Dells this is how I got the fans to work.

Re: Mint Mobile !

If a distribution like LM put all the programs in that all the people wanted it would be so bloated and take several DVDs to install. There are some basic programs and utilities that should be installed as default then the others added to the user's liking. For instance I have been reading all the c...

Re: Got a netbook

I've got a Gateway 3020u that is running Karmic & eeeBuntu 3 Base. In Karmic all works fine after I installed the wifi drivers for the Broadcom wireless nic. With eeeBuntu I have wifi but can not do updates as it breaks the wifi and the ethernet won't work either way because it's to new. SoI am wait...

Re: Internet Suddenly Disappeared - Help Please

There are some commands that will set the panel back to the default. I have used them to fix my panels on Ubuntu but I'm not sure if they would do the same for Mint so I am hesitent to post them here then have it mess someones panel up big time. Use this at your own risk, I have NOT tried this on Mi...

Re: An OS for the rest of us?

I'm gonna have to disagree here. My wife could never get the hang of Windows, I build her several computers at different times with Windows 3.1 up to XP and she could never get a handle on it, so they just set until I did something else with them. About a year ago she started again wanting a compute...

Re: xsane problem in Helena

As a temporary thing, I turn the preview through 180 degrees then crop it before scan. If I'm understanding you right you rotate the preview 180 degrees then crop it, this did not work for me. Also not sure if this would make a difference but I am running Mint8 32 bit on an AMD64 mainly because I o...

Re: Will our women ever appreciate Linux?

Mine could never figure out Windows, at work she had someone else get her email for her. About a year ago she bugged me about setting up one of my old laptops for her. I put it off for a long time but finally decided to fix it up for her. Myself having abandoned Windows I installed Ubuntu on it for ...

Re: xsane problem in Helena

I have the same problem using xsane and Mint 8 that others are reporting. In my case the same printer/scanner works fine when connected to one of my 9.10 machines. I did a complete removal and deleted the .xsane directory and reinstalled, same problem. Don't know if this makes a difference but my Mi...

Re: Mint on ultramobile - please help with software issues

I would uninstall Florence keyboard completley removing the configuration files also by doing a complete remove. I would then run

Code: Select all

 sudo apt-get autoclean
from a terminal.

Was this a clean install without using an existing /home directory

Re: no wifi broadcom4312 dell mini9 mint 8

WiFi will not work off the LiveCD without a hardwired ethernet connection so that the drivers can be downloaded. With my Gateway 2032u installing Ubuntu 9.10 I had to hook it up hardwire it to my eathernet network and the do all the updates. Afterwards I was able to open System/Administration/Hardwa...

Re: My little Baby: Persy, backup and sync your stuff

This sounds interesting. I use Ubuntuone to keep a few files in sync between my laptop and netbook. I also use Unison to transfer some keep so photos in sync between the 2 machines. Don't really need the online access that Ubuntuone has but it was there so I used it. I'm going to install Percy and s...

Re: Mint8 driver question. Built in Broadcom BCM4312 support?

I have a Gateway 2032u with the same Broadcom wireless nic. I'm currently running Ubuntu 9.10 on it without a problem. What I had to do to get the Broadcom driver to work was install it off the USB stick. Then I hardwired it to my local netwotk using the rj45 jack. Applied all the updates and reboot...

Mint8 boot problems (split from another topic) solved

I have had the same problem trying to install on my netbook using a USB stick created with Ubuntu's USB creator. I finally did Check CD for errors from the boot menu and it returned that there were errors in 5 files. I'm redownloading the ISO even though it did boot on my laptop just fine. When inst...
