Re: 32-bit vs. 64-bit

Up until I got my new laptop with the i7 740QM I thought that 32 bit was better and used less ram and I really didn't see any speed difference between the 2 I have also used the PAE module for the kernal so I felt that I wasn't wasting any of the ram I had pad for. WIth this laptop it seems to me th...

Re: Question about ATI cards and mint

The laptop I just bought has the ATI Mobility 5730 and it works fine with LM 10 RC1 using the recommended driver. I also tried it with LMDE and wasn't as happy with the video though it did work. I uused the sgfxi script to install the driver but I think it had to do with the xorg version, I think LM...

Re: Little extras that make Linux easier or more fun

Great idea 'AT' thanks for starting the thread I think I came across this while didtro hopping and found it very useful and now I install it on any distro that I use Parcellite is a lightweight GTK+ clipboard manager. This is a stripped down, basic-features-only clipboard manager with a small memory...

Re: Release: Linux Mint 10 RC

Installed LM 10 RC1 (64 bit) on a ASUS N61JQ laptop and for the most part it was trouble free. Only had 2 minor issues I wanted to report. 1. After connecting to my wifi home network and rebooting it did not connect again automaticly. - This was fixed by editing the connection and checking the Auto ...

Re: LMDE Touchpad Elantech

After doing some more research and looking at launchpad for bugrepoerts it appears that the elantech touchpad is reconized as a IM2/Mouse and it has been patched in kernal version 2.6.34 & 2.6.35 & LMDE is using 2.6.32. LM10 RC1 has kernal 2.6.34 heance the reason that it works as it should. Didn't ...

[Solved] LMDE Elantech Touchpad

I just got a new ASUS N61JQ-B1 it has a elantech touchpad and when I installed LMDE the touchpad works except for scrolling. Also stays enabled when typing which is a pain. If I boot with LM10 Rc1 scolling works and there are touchpad options under mouse. With LMDE there isn't a touchpad option unde...

Re: Netbook questions

I use powertop on all my laptops/netbooks and would recommend it, my Gateway netbook will go about 5 hrs with normal usage.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install powertop
then run it from a terminal

Code: Select all

sudo powertop
I just use the defaults that it suggest and haven't had a problem just longer battery life

Re: How to install Linux Mint on asus f5gl notebook

It's possible that you have a bad image file. Did you check the MD5 checksum of the iso image file? Also you need to burn the image to CD using the slowest speed. I have also had problems when I managed to get one of my paw prints on the CD and it couldn't read that part of the disk. To clean the pa...

Re: Will Mint 11 follow the Ubuntu way?

Why doesn't canonical ditch GNOME altogether? They're certainly heading that way. Now you take that back mister! I would never have had the courage to switch to Linux if it wasn't for the "idiot/noob-friendliness" of Gnome. :) I have to agree somewhat, when I 1st starting using Linux it was with KD...

Re: Mint Debian

I have noticed a lot of updates coming through for LMDE as of late, guess they are getting Squeeze ready for release in the next month or so. I'm excited that LM 10 is in RC so it won't be long before it is released and then maybe Clem & the boys will polish LMDE a little more. Yea!!

Re: Blank Screen during boot of Live CD

I was working on a HP laptop DV6000 I think and it would not boot to the deskiop. I had to hook up and external monitor on it so I could install it and the install the NVida drivers now it fine. Just a thought

Re: Radeon or Nvidia?

That's well and good if the one that has the Nvida Optimus card was available locally but it isn't so I thought maybe someone had tried this 1st hand. Thanks for the idea though. Simplest way to find out is to request your retailer to install LM 9 on both and try installing the drivers as soon as yo...

Re: Radeon or Nvidia?

The Asus laptop with the NVida also has the Intel graphic chipset too. Under Winders it will switch between the 2 to save the battery. My understanding is that NVida Optimus doesn't work under Linux. Under Linux which video card will it use? The one laptop N61jq I looked at I booted LM 9 from a USB ...

Re: X issue on boot

So I take it if you want to run Linux then the ASUS laptops with the NVida Optimus are a waste of money that you can't use the NVida chipset only the builtin Intel chipset. Unless you buy an I7 which doesn't have the builtin video chipset.
