Re: Cannot install 18.3 Cinnamon 64 on 4TB drive - won't boot

Any reason you can see for *not* going SSD for boot 'n swap? I have my root partition on a 128GB SSD, and the swap partition on the big HDD. With 8GB of ram, the swap is most likely never going to be used, so I can't think of any advantage to having it on the SSD. It would just take up room on that...

Re: Cannot install 18.3 Cinnamon 64 on 4TB drive - won't boot

Just to clarify... this tutorial does not solve my inability to boot a 4TB drive, but answers how to set up a "separate partition for boot loader code", correct? It could do both. If you set up the necessary partition for the bootloader, your installation should then work. And finally, the reason f...

I think you'll find the smallest nowadays is 128GB.
Agreed.
Although the marginal cost of going to a 256gb is low, for boot and swap I don't need it, so to get a new, up-to-date chip set, I think the 128gb SATA drive is my best option.

Thank you,

Re: Cannot install 18.3 Cinnamon 64 on 4TB drive - won't boot

Yah. As soon as the thought of a separate boot drive came to mind, my mind started racing, aka "SSD syndrome" :) One more question if you are so kind. The Optiplex 780 holds a maximum 16gb RAM. Meaning the maximum amount of swap I would possibly use is 2x that, or 32gb. Add to that, a boot partition...

Re: Cannot install 18.3 Cinnamon 64 on 4TB drive - won't boot

I'm feeling better now. This was a bit frustrating, but now, am cautiously optimistic that the solution may actually be better than having the boot happen from the spindled 4TB HD. Add a 64gb SSD Make two partitions One boot partition One swap partition Use the 4TB HD for "Home" From what I am readi...

Re: Cannot install 18.3 Cinnamon 64 on 4TB drive - won't boot

Thank you for the quick reply. That thought crossed my mind when I saw the BIOS (screenshot attached), so I updated the BIOS from v4 to v14 which is the most recent. That did not change this particular BIOS setting. The BIOS screen shows a "500GB" hard drive which would support what you are saying. ...

Solved: Cannot install 18.3 Cinnamon 64 on 4TB drive - won't boot

Hello, Having installed Mint countless times and 18.3 many times, this is a new problem that appears to be associated with a HD larger than 2TB, specifically a 4TB drive. After formatting the 4TB drive using GParted the same way done on a 1TB drive just a few days earlier, I installed Mint 18.3 Cinn...

Re: How to Send photo images via GMail browser client?

Thank you. Looks like "XnViewMP" is the answer. I did set up the GMail account using IMAP in order to keep all data on the GMail servers... makes it smoother across devices and it even stores a copy of the sent email with attachments on the server. Sending multiple emails is as simple as holding dow...

MOV files don't show/play in Default apps Cinnamon 18-64

Hello, In Mint 18 Cinnamon 64 bit version, when I open up default photo/video apps, .MOV files from an iPhone do not show or play. I can play them in VLC, but when I want to use a program such as gThumb or Shotwell or XnView MP, these .MOV files show up as an icon, not a thumb and won't play. They d...

Re: Any Chrome Apps to edit and title photos?

What a perfect example of why Linux has failed on the desktop. For a low-skilled user (and their are millions of them!!!) cannot find a way to send a photo via GMail web portal. I know, I know... attach the file. But this user (and many others I know) are clueless when it comes to doing that. They n...

Too complicated for the user.
And the "send by email" does not work and there are no instructions on how to make it work.

Re: Any Chrome Apps to edit and title photos?

Thank you for the reply, but it does not seem you read the user needs. There is no " normal way of sending emails ". That is what I am asking for. The user I am helping is not able to find the photo in the file system and attach to an email. The user I am helping needs to see a thumbnail or the full...

GIMP does not email the photo using GMail.

And it's not intuitive enough for the user.
I use GIMP every day, but the user of the computer in question?
No chance.
thanks for viewing though.

How to Send photo images via GMail browser client?

Hello, On a Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon 64 bit system I need to be able to send a photo via a gmail email account. I really don't want to mess with Thunderbird. Would LOVE to send an individual photo, preferably from within an app to a GMail account. For the friend who has this computer, this is a "must ...

Re: How do I copy a file and retain the *original date*?

In Mint 17.2 Cinnamon (64-bit) I just single left click on a file in Nemo to highlight it, right click-COPY then in the new directory right click-PASTE... and the file is copied with the "date modified" intact. That's exactly what I've been doing, but it does not work, the pasted file has today's d...

Re: How do I copy a file and retain the *original date*?

I see a lot of command line options for retaining date and time stamps when copying or moving a file, but nobody has mentioned a way to copy and paste using a mouse. I used to be able to do this in Mint and the original or last modified date did not change. Now I cannot copy or move a file and have ...

I actually deleted the files in file manager as user, not as root. (or so I think. kinda forgot that particular point now (user vs. root on the initial delete.))

but solved. Phew!
