Re: Poor Cinnamon 3.8 article

Yes, it's a silly take. First, Mint was around, and was plenty successful, even before Cinnamon existed. So no, Cinnamon is not the reason Mint exists. Second, what does he want, for them to hold Cinnamon up for a month, even though it's ready? That would prevent lots of bugs from being quashed, as ...

Re: Mint 18.3 running in 'software rendering' mode

Well since that's a new chip (released in December) on a relatively new platform, the problem may be that it isn't recognized yet by the driver. Really, the radeon driver should be loading. But also, the Card: description there identifies it as AMD, but just gives a Device number; I think that would...

Re: Frequent failure after wake from suspend

Suspend to RAM and Suspend to disk are different. So saying "suspend" in the title didn't necessarily resolve all ambiguity. Which one you use often has to be set in the bios. I gather you are talking about suspend to RAM (S3) here, though. Problems with suspend have been pretty common over the year...

Re: Calculator with a save or retention feature

Well it's a lot more than just a calculator, but I just use python for this. And it has some wrinkles, like needing to use a decimal to insure floating point arithmatic, so that you don't get, for example, 7/8=0.

Re: Linux Mint 18.3 brother 2140 network printer settings wont stick

Have you figured out *what* settings won't stick? Is a file you are editing being overwritten, for example, when a machine is rebooted? What exactly do you have to redo, to get it working again? Have you been re-running the install script from Brother? Also check that you are using a fixed IP addres...

Re: Linuxmint 18.3 is loaded only in recovery mode.

Possibly you just need one of the boot options, like "nomodeset" which is used in recovery mode. If you can run "inxi" in recovery mode, post the output for inxi -Fxxz . If there is an issue, with your graphics hardware for example, there's a good chance you also might find it mentioned in the relea...

I just ran diff -s on the two files, and got this:

Files /usr/bin/python3.5 and /usr/bin/python3.5m are identical

So it looks like you're good.

Re: Keep linux system awake and running

Well if you are running a default installation, it probaly is still running the whole X windows system, display manager, window system, etc., and is configured by default to sleep after a certain time to protect the screen (which is no longer attached). Next time you log in, try this: sudo service l...

Re: Graphic boot options

It seems to me, your options are: 1. Edit /etc/default/grub to change the default If an existing menu option boots properly, and you want to make that the default, you may only need to change the line that says GRUB_DEFAULT=0 to something else. If it's the third line in your current menu you want, f...

Re: Urgent: Changed CLI, How to reset CLI to 'Other' Profile?

Maybe try CTL-ALT-F1 to get a console, and from there, sign in and run a terminal emulator giving it the location and display like this:

x-terminal-emulator -geometry 42x21+0+0 -display :0

Then you can use the menu to edit the profile from there.

Re: login password keeps changing

You should be able to create another boot disk or usb stick or something using another computer. Then, after booting with that, use gparted to reformat the drive and create new partitions, etc. I guess the question is whether there is any data on there that you really need to save, first. If it's as...

Re: Changing the default location for /Home folders?

If you put it in the fstab, you won't need to do anything else (once you reboot). The line added to your /etc/fstab will look something like this: UUID=#### /home/mintman/Downloads ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 2 The #### above replaced by the UUID of the partition (foud using blkid command). At boot, th...

Re: Trying to SSH TUNNEL but need assistance...

Well the -D option specifies the port on the local machine that will be forwarded. The network never sees that port, you don't need to open it. But you do need traffic to reach the server on port 22, that's the ssh port. If the server is behind a router, make sure that port is forwarded. You don't n...

Re: login password keeps changing

First off, if these problems are happening in a GUI, try using a command line. It's not clear to me where you are logging into the hard drive from. Is this your boot drive, and you have to log in at boot, before Mint has even loaded? If that's the case, you'll have to set your system to boot from an...

Re: no wireless option, wired only, please help

You may not have a needed driver installed for your wireless adaptor. Some are not open source. If you can connect with a wired connection temporarily, do so and run "driver manager" from the menu. That should tell you if there are proprietary drivers available for download. Also run inxi -SMn and p...

Re: Changing CPU to a newer model.

Don't think it should matter to the OS, now that the bios has already been updated. The new CPU on the same platform should support the instruction set of the old CPU completely. The one thing I would check though, is if you are using CPU integrated graphics. That's one area where I can see a potent...
