Re: Wishlist - broadcom wireless firmware pre-installed.

Edit - removed post due to missing that OP stated later in thread they have BCM4311, not 4312.

Re: Which Firefox Plugins Do I Need?

Have you tried them in another browser (Chrome or Chromium) or disabled all extensions and add-ons to see if they work? A default Firefox install should just work on that site. I'm in Chrome (on Chrome OS - Linux based) and they all work.

Re: Wireless Ralink RT5390 dropping too many packets

Sorry, haven't had much success otherwise. The only other issues with the RT2xxx driver I have seen is improper blacklisting, but I'm sure you have that covered with all the research you've had to do.

Re: Upgrading to Olivia makes me think of switching back W7

Were you ever able to figure out if it's hardware, the OS, driver (video or other) or whatever causing the problems? Just curious if you know the end result and not just the workaround (using Gnome shell....ugggg). I'd ditch in a hurry if I were stuck in Gnome Shell. Did you try KDE or another DE to...

Curious if you've tried updating via terminal and then trying to install it again (mark for complete removal and then reinstall) via Synaptic? Or Mint's software center?

Check out the very last post on the bug thread above. It suggests trying a newer driver bcmwl-kernel-source_6.30.223.30+bdcom-0ubuntu1~eugenesan~raring1 instead of the older 5.x driver.

Re: Why do you always have to ruin everything?

Without getting into a debate about the method with which you chose to voice your problems and concerns, is it possible you have hardware issues on your machine? To have usability issues across Mint 10, 11, 12, 13, 15 suggests something else is going on besides issues with Mint since the majority of...

Re: Linux Mint 14 slow wireless network

Could be a driver issue. Mint 15 and Ubuntu 13.04 are having issues with some Broadcom cards (BCM4313 is one for sure). I don't know if 14 is impacted as well. Can you tell us what adapter you have? Just open a terminal and give us the output of

Re: Help I'm Stuck

The window manager around your picture is Windows. If you made a bootable USB, you would need to restart the machine and select the USB, or move it higher in the priority listing of drives for the machine to boot from. When you run it live, you'll never get to Windows unless you restart and remove t...

Re: Installing Mint on Windows Ubuntu

Yes, very easily. When you go through the install routine, just assign root (/) to the partition where Ubuntu resides. If you use a separate home partition, assign that as well. Swap shouldn't need to be changed at all so it should be a very straightforward install.

Re: Wireless Ralink RT5390 dropping too many packets

That particular card has bug issues on Ubuntu - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1173759 - but it looks like post #14 on that bug link may supply a fix by using a downloaded file from Ralink and blacklisting the stock driver. Not sure if it'll solve your problem, but hoping it helps.

I found nothing to suggest that printer is compatible with Linux. From Dell's site it only seems to work on OSX if "Windows 8 Compatible", as they have it listed, is true.

Re: ridiculous

Although your situation is troubling, Windows does not come with video drivers. You get a crappy VGA capability until the OS (or the user) goes and gets one from the manufacturer or installs from disk. I'm talking full blown copy of Windows, not some OEM with every driver for the machine included. I...

Re: Is Linux Mint Spyware/Prism proof?

While I cannot confirm any pieces aren't present in Mint, the culprit of the spyware claim in Ubuntu is the desktop within the Unity desktop environment, developed by Ubuntu, communicating with Canonical servers. Since Mint uses Mate, Cinnamon, KDE, etc., I would assume, perhaps mistakenly, that tho...

It's a bug with that driver in Ubuntu and Mint. The bug is https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1110139 and you can look toward the end of posts on that page for a driver version others have used with success.

Re: OS for dual quadcore system?

No need for 2 PC's. You can do Linux and Windows on just one. But to run OSX you need a Mac. If you really want to run all 3 just buy an iMac or Mac Mini and run them all. OSX is easy to learn and it's based on FreeBSD so it starts out open source and ends up...not. :)

Re: how to enable touchpad on acer...

That's odd that it is disabled by default. You may need a script for startup that enables the touchpad as part of the bootup process. Does the touchpad work at the login screen but not work once fully booted?
