Re: What are you most dissatisfied with in Linux Mint?

I most dislike that a thorn in the side of some distros is heat. All the *buntus and Mint 8 and 9 have serious issues with heat on many users' machines, evident by a quick search of both the Mint and Ubuntu forums. This has been ongoing for several iterations but not addressed in any reasonable way....

Re: Laptop won't boot in Windows or Linux

If it is only a year old I highly doubt it is the CMOS battery. That battery helps the motherboard hold your bios settings so your machine knows how to boot, what hardware you have, etc. You get into your bios by clicking whatever "settings" key your Acer screen tells you when you first boot up. I t...

Re: Laptop won't boot in Windows or Linux

If you can't boot from the LiveCD you have a hardware issue (or a bad CD, but I doubt that's the problem). Assuming the disk is good, all your system needs is the bios to know your hardware and then for it to load from CD. Did you move the CD up in the bios listing of devices so it tries to load fro...

High Heat (Laptop)

I have an Acer Extensa that runs cool under Windows Vista, Mandriva and PCLinuxOS. However, every time I try Ubuntu or Mint I have very high operating temperatures aside from just idle. Last night I kept the terminal open and ran "sensors" every few minutes to see what my various temps were. They al...

Re: NEED HELP OR WILL HAVE TO GO BACK TO WINDOWS!

How did you get it working in Mint 8? Did you have to do anything special or did it work right after install? If you took steps to get it working before, those same steps are probably required this time. What wireless adapter do you have? Use lspci in the terminal and paste the output for the wirele...

Re: PCLinuxOS Kde 2010

I have it running on 2 laptops and 1 desktop right now. PCLinuxOS is the fastest distro I have used (of about 10 I have hopped around on) and that's in KDE, which is supposed to be "heavy". Also, it is not available in 64 bit but I would challenge another distro to match it for everyday speed, 32 bi...

Just a thought....have you considered Swiftfox 3.6? WAY faster than Firefox and geared toward your specific processor.

Re: Help Removing Linux

Agreed....make sure you move the CD/DVD up in the list in your bios so the system detects the CD before looking for an OS on the hard drive. If you have already done so, your install disk is likely corrupt or not being recognized for another reason that is not Linux related because Bios controls you...

Re: Graphics card/driver questions

I wish I could help on the recommendation side but I run on a laptop and have stuck with the nVidia card installed and I run at 1280x800. I have used other distros with the 195 driver and I did not notice a change in performance, but that is not really any indicator of how it will perform on yours. ...

Re: Which version of Mint is the best????

Art, I think the best thing a guy like you can appreciate is the fact that nothing gets into Linux without you letting it in. There are no automatic installs and .exe files and other items do not automatically execute. There may be items that TRY to install or run by asking for permission to do so, ...

Re: Graphics card/driver questions

The question I have is whether you were running such a high resolution already and having good results in full screen? If you were using a lower resolution with positive results then you are likely pushing your video card, RAM and/or CPU beyond their capabilities to handle such a high resolution. Yo...

Re: "NEW" Linux Mint For Newbies [2010] HELENA

Spike, I can only speak to my own experience as a new Linux user, but maybe it will shed some light for you. I decided I wanted to switch from Windows because Vista bogs down my older machines. Newer ones are fine and I still run Vista on them. I would never recommend getting rid of Windows complete...

[SOLVED] Can't right-click desktop to add applets?

Thanks Pompom, but they show installed when I go into synaptic. In Synaptic it says installed versions: 0.36.1-2ubuntu1 (gdesklets) 0.35.6-3 (applets for gdesklets) Am I missing something else? EDIT: Is there a step I need to take to actually use them or activate them? I am not seeing any of the app...

Can't right-click desktop to add applets?

I switched to Mint 8 64 bit recently and have been searching for how to add applets to the desktop instead of to the panel. For example, if I want a desktop clock from the applets within Mint, how do I apply them on the desktop? It's easy to do in Ubuntu but I've been searching and can't find it. I ...

Re: Mintified Google search

Try the Google extension for Firefox that allows you to perform your search right in the URL (address) bar. In Chrome or Chromium it's standard and works great. Saves you having to go to the Google site first. Just type in your search terms and hit enter. It'll know you are searching because your se...

Re: Linux Mint 8 is Awesome!

I did the same thing, but I started with Ubuntu. It was nice but I had a feeling there was something with a better interface so I kept trying distros. I tried Fedora 12, OpenSUSE 11.2, Mint 8 32 bit, Mandriva and PCLinuxOS. I liked a few of them, but they all felt "quirky" in some way to me by havin...
